Permit for Thai motorcycle into Myanmar-where from?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know where I can try to obtain a permit to take my thai registered motorcycle into myanmar?

I emailed MTT already but they did not reply

I would enter and leave at Mae Sot andspend a few days riding to Moulmein and back, on my own, or maybe with a friend or two and their bikes.

I do not want an organised tour or guide if it can be avoided

MTT are very unreliable and tend not to send replies to emails - however, I wouldn't trust that they pick up phone calls either. It's best to make arrangements with a Thai based travel agency with experience with such requirements.

Unfortunately, I think right now you may still be required to go on a tour to take your motorcycle with you - it's quite easy to get permission to bring a motorcycle or car on a tour, with minimal advance notice and only US$50 for customs and document fees, but going alone or even with just one guide is not currently possible from what I have found out - I think a convoy is required.

In the next 1-2 years, this may change and individual travel by car or motorcycle, brought in from abroad should become possible.

Update: 2 Russian cars entered Kawthoung a few weeks ago (I presume) and left Myawady for Mae Sot on Nov 12. They had with them a guide from the Ministry of Tourism and no convoy or anything else. I think you will need either a Thai travel agent to arrange a tour, or a Myanmar travel agent to arrange a trip with a guide if you are going by yourself or with a couple of friends. The only unreliable aspect is that Myanmar travel agencies are HOPELESS when it comes to emails. They might send you a reply or two, but then there is a communication silence even if you get close to booking a tour. If you really want to go with your own bike, email several travel agents and keep following up. Send them 5-10 emails if necessary so they get the message.

A more reliable method would be to show up in Myanmar in person BEFORE conducting the tour to make the arrangements, then come back a second time to conduct the actual tour. This would obviously be inconvenient, but most travel agencies are so unreliable I can't think of any more reliable method.
