If you have an apartment in Bangkok and have spent 5 Months there you are hardly a tourist. Try that in any western country with tourist visa rules and you would be denied also. my country , Australia, come to mind. 90 day tourist visa for you , no problem. leave the country for a day or so and re-apply, no way you will get another one.

All these ways of staying in Thailand without actually having the right visa annoy the hell out of me i.e. ED visa with no intention of actually studying. If you do not have the correct requirements for a long term visa i.e. retirement with suitable funds. married to a Thai with suitable funds or working here legitimately then you don't belong here other than for a genuine holiday. I have lived in Thailand for 6 years and work here. I never have a problem renewing my yearly visa as I submit the correct paperwork and meet the requirements.

If you don't have the funds or the meet Thailand's visa requirements legally then you should not be here as people trying on all these scams to stay here just make life more difficult for foreigners that live here legally.

Easy for you. I'm retired and too young for retirement visa. I have more than the monetary requirements and regular income. So what's a guy in THAT situation to do?

investment visa. 10 million baht. it would cost you a lot more to retire in america or canada.

You can go for an investment visa. I posted and extract from the Thai Immigration web site earlier in this topic.

2 Choices (aside from staying home):

Live somewhere that they actually welcome you.

or

Put up with the minor inconveniences of being a long stay tourist where they let you, and take your chances that the doors will close to you at some time in the future.

Edit: 3rd choice, follow the rules and invest enough money to qualify you to live in Thailand legally. Good luck seeing that investment again. Ever.

Fly back to Bangkok

Get a 30 stamp at airport on the way thru customs

Then plan a trip to Laos to apply for new tourist visa

this is the answer, its still a free world last I heard despite the authoritarian try hards at the Singapore consulate and some thaivisa posters

I can see her perspective, you don't sound like a tourist to me either.

Time to consider other options.

Oh give us a break. What are you the tourist police? There are thousands of foreigners who stay long term in Thailand on a tourist visa ... and the government is very well aware of such. I've been doing it for twenty plus years myself.

To the OP ... the Thai embassy woman in Singapore is absolutely wrong. Just fly back to BKK, get 30 day stamp on arrival and later go to Laos to get a double entry tourist visa.

perhaps the government has decided its time to put a stop to it.

They are lovely creature aren't they? Live a succesful life here with all their Visas, WPs in order, surely wai all day, still feel the need to poke and lecture the person that they view as not good as them.

many people that live in thailand full time with all their visas and wp's in order get frustrated at those who fiddle the system because they are worried that the resulting crackdown will make their lives more difficult.

Well, I bet this thread will attract those who are jumping all hula hoops and feel superior standing in the pinnacle of righteousness.

I feel that Thailand deserves to see that tourists and others may have other choices...I've been here 12 years with various visas (probably tried every and each one besides the religious one) and now tired of all the bullshit that one has to take every day, from month to month, from year to year. Living among corruption, inadequacy and questionable practices has finally caught up with me. I don't want loose my integrity and moral values being part of disgrace what goes for public service in Thailand.

So, after all I have been through, I am selling everything and relocating to good old Europe. You standing on the pinnacle can keep all this to yourselves. Hope you will feel happy in the lovely polluted winds up there.

We are all searching for happiness. Good luck in your travels my friend.

Are you saying that the government would confiscate the 10 million baht from your bank account when the visa was up? Do you have any links for that having happened, because if that's true... that's pretty screwed up.

You have to obtain the rules from an Immigration Lawyer e.g Siam Legal in Bangkok or online.

Everyone has to bear in mind though that the granting of a Thai Visa and entry into Thailand is purely at the discretion of the Consulate and the Immigration Officer. In your present position it might be worth renting a cheap apartment in Malaysia or Cambodia then try again in a few weeks.

Several totally false information posts have been removed - there is no 3 month limit to tourist visa stays in Thailand in any set period of time and the previous policy was only for visa exempt entry and changed when than became 15 days at land crossings.

If anybody else have doubts about the 90 days in six months rule here is screen shot of police order 778/2251 that rescinded the previous police order.

at least in the European Union it is possible to buy property (including land of course) and therefore get a permit of stay. It is starting from Euro 70,000 ( less than 3 million baht) and enables you to stay in any Schengen country.

So what you want to say, that buying property does not make it possible to stay in the Western country you want to stay, is simply wrong. Probably it's not possible for all Western countries but for many.

I also don't see where the difference is between someone who is 51 with enough money and want to stay permanently in Thailand and the one who is 41 with enough money and want to stay permanently in Thailand.

Oh do settle petal,

If the guy has cash to finance living without working then I would call him a full-time tourist, where do you see a problem with that.

does your home country offer a full time tourist visa for foreigners??

The issue at hand is not what his or your country does but what is done here. Whether right or wrong in your eyes is academic though you are permitted your opine in this forum. And in this case the OP will work it out. Guessing he may have done so already. Yes..., do settle..., petal.

"and what visa do you get if your 45 ( under 50),, sold nyour business, very well off and retired,,,, sense you seem to know everything about everyone else."

--------------------------------------

I have always been bewildered by the visa run way of life and all the other shenanigans that people pull, only to have the privilege of "living" in Thailand. Follow the laws, either marry, invest or wait till you are 50 to retire here. So many of you remind me that America's white trash relocates to Las Vegas, and the rest of the world's white trash goes to... Thailand. Good luck visa runners. BTW, anyone who is married and can not come up with 400,000 baht in a savings account, can not afford to support a wife, and cam not afford to relocate to this country. Good luck.

Right on! Remember, this is Thailand. This is their country and they make the rules, whether we like it or not. If they don't want us here, then fine. We will have to find somewhere else to live. I have applied for my yearly retirement at the Phibun Immigration office every year for the past 5 years without any problems. This year was a goat rope. Talk about nitpicking. I figure if they don't want me here, then I will go. There are plenty of countries around the world that will welcome you with open arms.

Investment......VIP card.

What makes you feel you have some right to live in Thailand?

Better be a visa runner for life than make the conscious decision to "support a wife" in any country. Let us know how she will support you if your money is gone.

No matter how much we each personally believe our presence in Thailand has improved the country, only a Thai passport will give you the absolute right to reside in Thailand.

They have always been very sticky on the return or onward flight ticket to prove we're tourists, I suppose. Its something that's easy to forget if you're living here and might make them suspicious in these tightening times.

I doubt the government would confiscate your money. But neither can it be counted on to protect you from those that would.

If 10,000,000 baht safely ensconced in a secure Thai bank account were adequate to qualify for permanent residence or even a long stay visa (under 50 years old) in Thailand, I'd be surprised. And a lot of my buddies wouldn't be making border runs.

A 10,000,000 baht investment into a company where you own less than 50% and your accountant and partners and lawyers all have access to the funds- is not quite as secure.
