Im looking to get a Bulldog here in Samui. I thought I would have to go to Bangkok but someone said that they are available on the island.

I heard there is a dog resecue center somewhere, but Id really prefer to get a puppy from a breeder or pet store. The only pet stores I have seen are only fish.

So where are the dogs for sale?

there is a petshop in baan makham close to nathon, when I was there last a few days ago she had 2 british bulldog puppies there.

aw there are so many cute little strays that need help, are you sure you can't get one of them?

The Bulldogs in Samui ive seen before are ok,but mostly they seem to be similar to the pups here in BKK at Chatuchak market. In other words a big risk bcause of health issues.Last I heard the Bulldog pups were 25k in Samui which is alot for the quality.

Better to buy in BKK.4-5 quality breeders here and offer good info for the new owner.

Let me know if you need more info on the breeders.

Skyline is pretty much spot on.... I wouldnt bother with a Bulldog from the Nathon pet shop. Actualy I wouldnt bother with any dog from the Nathon pet shop. Interestingly, she has some good breeds from time to time - English Bull Terriers, American Bull Terriers, Bulldogs, Boxers, Rotties, I even seen a Harlequin Great Dane once and those things are very, very rare - but the dogs them selves are ropey, to say the least.

Plus, and maybe Skyline can correct me on this if i am wrong, but Bulldogs dont last too long here in LOS. Short life span in cooler climates, but here they only last, what.... 6-7 years average (again, correct me if wrong). IMO, you should widen your options and consider other breeds also. There are some nice Pit's out here, but they do tend to loose there livley personality in this heat and develop a lazy attitude.

Definatley, definatley get over to Bangkok and look around. Much better dogs and wider choice. I disagree and think Chatauchak is ok - there are a couple (only a couple) of good breeders there, especialy the Police fella who sells English Bulls, American Pit's. I do agree that the prices are steep in BKK though. Most desirable things are though, usualy only the Thais with a little bit of money can aford quality breeds, so the price goes up.

IMO, the market in between BKK and Kanchanaburi is good for dogs. I forget the name of the town.... about 40k's out of BKK ( i'll find out the name). Has one very good general Bull breeder there, very passionate.... though buy young and train them as a fammily pet, as the pups are all from a fighting blood line and intendid as guard dogs. The plus side with this is you will get a sporting dog, but you must bring them up correctly. I have a number for a breeder there.... but cant for the life of me remember the town. Begins with N, anyone! Nakhon something? I dunno....

Pm me if you need some phone numbers, i have a couple but only BKK. None of them for Bulldogs but they can refer you.

Well, the lifespan of Bulldogs is short in general, but if the dog is healthy and comes from a line of healthy long-lived dogs there is no reason why some bulldogs can't live for 10 yrs plus.

The most popular kennels in BKK are:

Big Bone Bulldog 01 642 0662

Winsan 01 918 2002

Tunjo 06 888 0077

Marino 06 625 1077

Tora 09 128 2228

If you decide to get a Bulldog, buy at least 2-3 good books on the breed or find as much info as you can on the internet because they need special requirements especially in the Thai heat.

Heat stroke can be a killer so be prepared.

Vets fees can be higher for Bulldogs.

Choose food carefully.

Always have ice available.

They need their faces cleaned every day.

Other than the problems associated with Bulldogs they make fantastic pets. They arent aggressive with other dogs unless provoked and they get along with everyone. They can be very lazy and they do snore and fart!

Hey Sky. Usefull phone numebers, i may use them myself, will be in the market for another dog in the next 4 weeks.

Question for you (and if you can refer me, i will by you many a beer)..... Staffies in LOS (Stafordshire Bull Terrier, in caede you are a U.S). Where the heck do you go? I have asked many breeders of general sporting dogs, but have never found a definative contact for a Staff. I appreciate you will not find a sporting Staff here (Like, Irish line etc) but surely there must be one breeder? Any ideas? Surely one dog that would not give a bugger about the climate here in LOS, is a Staff, and I would love one.

I like Pit's, but only back home. They just get so lazy in this heat.

English bulls is my first option if i cant find a Staff. Never had one before, but i like the breed. Simmilar to a Staff with bags of personality, energy, playfull, sporting, working etc etc. Again, the heat can be a problem with BUll though.

Would love a Staff. If you know a breeder, please let me know.

hi batty,

Im from London. We had a Staffy when I was growing up,he was a great dog and lots of fun.Ive never seen a breeder of them here only American Staffordshires which are a lot bigger dogs.A friend in Songkla wanted a staff and was considering bringing one over from the UK,so I would think there arent any breeders here.Sorry I cant help more.

Yes thats what i thought.... hard to find. I could ship one over, but i dont like to buy blind. of course i could go home, select a dog and then ship but bloody hel_l.... you have to draw the line somewhere!

I'll go for a Bull Terrier I think. Bags of them here. I know a breeder that has Bulls of a fighting line, which I want. Dont take that the wrong way, as i disaprove of fighting dogs and of course would never condone such a horrible past time, however the dog will be supremley fit and healhty geneticly, bags of muscle etc.... and if you buy young and bring up responsibly, you have a little bag of muscle that would not hurt a fly and is friendly with all dogs. I like that. Fit, but friendly.

I agree Batty,

Im totally against dog fighting but unfortunately it goes on here in Thailand. There are a couple of Thai magazines that advertise dog fighting 'accessories' as well as the dogs themselves, treadmills and stuff like that. Its such a cruel sport.

Ive seen lots of nice English Bull Terriers and they apparantly make great pets too.Prices I think are around 30k for a good bloodline and cheaper dogs around 15k.Bull Planet is one of the renowned breeders that offer nice pups.

Bull Planet.... Bangkok?

Do you have a location or phone number?

30K sounds steep. I dont mind paying it for a quality dog, but i would not be able to tell the difference with a pup. I know a fair bit about sporting dogs, but i am no expert.... To be honest, i would not be able to tell the difference between a 15K and 30K dog, thats my only worry. I just go by the breeders rep. If you say Bull Planet is reputable, i will trust that.

Any idea where they are?

By the way to the OP. sorry for hijacking the thread....as it happens i am in the market, and Skyline has come up with some usefull info.

If you go to the go-gos behind McDonalds in Lamai there's a huge ladyboy that might meet your requirements.

(sorry, the topic title was asking for a cheap gag :o )

Someone else pointed me to that Nathon shop. I didnt get to see the dogs yet but I called and the lady said she had 3 available, ranging from 14-16,000 each.

If I do get one in bangkok how would I get it to Samui? We Bangkok Air and they told us that they have a special place for dogs but they just get loaded together with the baggage and pay a cargo fee (like ~300 baht for under 10 kilo or something)

I remember last time I was at JJ market in BKK I saw a decent looking bulldog for 8,000. I dont know about the "quality" though. Im not sure what to be looking for here.

Batty,

Bull Planet do have a god rep and I know they are connected to Tunjo Bulldogs.I know that Tunjo is located out on Ramintra Rd but not sure about the exact location.

Poor Farang,

The problem with buying a cheap Bulldog is you wont know the history of the pups parents. This is important with Bulldogs more than any other breed. You should see both parents and then you can assess the health issues that will be apparent in the older dogs.Breathing problems can be common in cheaper pups and in Thailand this will mean lots of vet bills and ultimately heartbreak for you.

8,000Baht for a Bulldog???........Thats asking for trouble. The only excuse for a Bulldog being sold as cheaply as that is........it will be a black coloured dog.Black Bulldogs arent 'accepted' as real Bulldogs, hence the cheaper price.

Take a look at the following sites to gauge how a 'real' Bully pup should look:

www.bigbonebulldog.com

www.thaibulldog.com

www.bulldoginformation.com

If you need any help/info let me know.

As far as prices go for Bulldogs the following will help you:

15-20K Should have at least 1 pedigree parent.Healthy dog.

20-30K Both parents will be pedigree and maybe 1 parent a show winner.

30-40K Imported parents. Not always the best buy though!

40-60K 'Show quality' pups.Imported parents.

60-150K Good bloodlines and show quality.

Try to remember that Bulldogs in the Uk are around 2000 pounds (140K baht) for a nice dog.In my opinion go for a dog thats 20-25K from a reputable breeder.

Please Please Please consider at least taking a visit to the dog rescue centre in Samui. They have a couple of dogs that are half bulldog, but most importantly they have over 200 dogs who are all in need of someone like you to give them a nice home. The dog rescue centre will give you free veterinary care for life if you take one of their dogs, puppy or grown.

You know, I have had dogs my entire life and not once have I ever felt the need for a purebred dog with a show quality blood line. Personally, I feel that there are enough homeless dogs in this world that truly need help and are there, in general, because of human carelessness and callousness. So, I, at the moment, have 5 mixed breed dogs. All of whom are lovely, intelligent, healthy and well behaved. They are perfectly adapted to their climate and need no special care to thrive.

To each their own, its just a suggestion that it might make Samui a better place to give a homeless dog a home then to bring in yet another dog.

You don't like it, don't listen. No need to be smart alecky.

spot on sbk! thai dogs are cool! and - they are for free :o

but for some people a dog is also a prestige thing... and they rather spend thousands of baht to purchase one and later thousands of baht for special vet, care and trainig costs... rather than taking in a dog in need or even give a second glance at one...

do they have more fun with these dogs? are these dogs more lovely or intelligent? are these dogs more loveable? I think not - but each to his own I guess.

The dog rescue people collected a puppy from here, did the op,dropped him back a couple of months later, collar saying please feed me & tag saying he has been vaccinated. Well this dog adopted us here, my neighbours loved him so much they took him to their new house. What a lovely dog.I still see him & I think I'll be getting a local dog,a lot easier to handle & suited to conditions.
