If I make a land border crossing and I have a one day overstay, can I still make a nominal succesful border run and pay the one day fine at the border? Or can overstays only be handled at an ariport? Pattaya to Cambodia and Back is my hope. I am hearing good rumors about land crossings for G-7 member countries, UK, USA, Germany now get 30 days on a land crossing versus previous 15 days so this is exactly what I would do if I can.

Thanks

Yes you can pay overstay at a land border.

Thank you for the oversaty feedback. Now unfortunately, I can't find any visa company in Pattaya that is aware of this possible change to land crossings that give G-7 countries (USA in my case) 30 days versus 15 days.

I am not surprised !

There has as far as I know been no "official" announcement.

Some companies will not take you if you have an overstay because of the risk of getting stopped at a check point on the way to the border.

Maybe a solution would be to apply for a 7 day extension( reduced in days by the overstay), pay the overstay and then immediately do the border run

They don't reduce the number days you get. There are people that had an overstay longer than the 7 days to leave and still got them all.

I appreciate the thoughts on the overstays. Looks like it will be a moot point as I can't get any confirmation or assurance that land crossings give 30 days versus 15 days. I called two travel companies in Pattaya and neither knew of it and both had customers this week that still got 15 days. One had even just called the "immigration man" at the border. So, if I decide to extend my trip, I will fly from BKK at the last minute and pay one day overstay there. I might even go for the 60 day tourist visa if I go through the trouble of flying out of the country.

If you have an over stay of less than 24 hours you don't have to pay fine at the airport at a border you do though.

You could make a trip to Vientiane for a tourist visa by flying to Udon and then by van to the bridge in Nong Khai. No risk of checkpoints that way.

Yes.. you can pay at ANY border..

and, if you cant find a visa-run company to take you...

then just get a bus to the border yourself and do the visa yourself. its not exactly hard!

when you arrive there will be lots of guys offering to do it for you (with an added fee),, and it will still be cheaper than your visa run company!

1 day Land X-ing from Pattaya:

Not a problem; just go see Khun Paa at the Queen Victoria Pub in Soi 6 (between Beach Rd., and 2nd Road) - she will sort you out and may I add that she's the best in the business in Pattaya !

You can call her before you go there to make sure she's behind her desk: 086 1471 618

I and my friends have used her services many times, your worries are over.

I went to the market at Aranyaorathet, which is close to the Cambodian border on Monday with my girlfriend, her son and her niece. On the way, there some 3 or 4 police checkpoints and whilst we were waved through each of them, I did see a minibus that had been pulled over at one of them, presumably to check on anyone who had overstayed their visa.

At one of the check points heading into the country the Police were stopping all vehicles presumably to check for illegal immigrants.

Whilst there is no fine for a 1 day overstay, I did hear about someone 2 or 3 years ago who was arrested at a checkpoint for having just that.

I keep hearing 15 and 30 day border crossings. Every time I work it out, it really turns out to be 14 and 29 days. If you come in on the 1st day of the month, and are forced to leave on 30th day, the math shows 29 days, for example.

This is in contrast to an extension on a 30 day travel visa. The extension starts the "day after" the 60th day.

A small point, I know. Just saying.

You are given a 15 or 30 day entry but that includes the day you enter. It has to be done that way because a person would not have a permit to stay for that first day.

Only border and air runners loose a day if they leave and re-enter on the same day.

Some really good information on here.

Just to clarify, you can pay a ThB 500 one-day overstay at any land border, but airports do not fine you if the overstay is just one day.

The reason for this difference is that some flights leave Thailand in the early hours of the morning and fining people for just a few hours' overstay is viewed as a tad harsh, so everyone gets the one day leeway. Well, that is what I have always understood.

I did just make a land visa run at Poi Pet today. I did pay the one day overstay there fine of 500 baht. I did get a 30 day visa stamp back into Thailand. I am a USA citizen. Note that when you pay the fine, you get a "police Report" fine receipt, and also sign another document that had a few carbon copies. Since technically an overstay is a law violation, I probably now have a police record. Innocuous and harmless? Probably. But as databases get sent around to agencies, summary reports generated, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody in some office somewhere sees something like "Has a police report" and is not going to bother digging in for the details. Just a caution.

There is no police record for an overstay. It might be noted on your immigration record is all. All your assumptions are wrong.

Even the small blue stamp you got will mean nothing in the future.

An overstay will not show on any police record. There is no police report done for an overstay. Thousands have gotten them with no future problem.

You mentioned this in another topic but your post got removed because it was in reply to another post that had to be removed because it was off topic. In that post you mentioned that one of the two documents you had to sign contained words such as "case settlement number" and the word settlement rang a bell. It is mentioned in the Immigration Act under the title of Penalty:

Section 84 : In all offenses under this Act, except the provisions of Section 62
Para.1 Section 63 , 64, 71 and 82 Para.2. The settlement Commission ,consisting
of the Police Department’s Director General or Representative, the Public
Prosecution Department’s Director General or Representative, and the
Immigration Division’s Commander or Representative, as the, members shall
have the authority to assign duty of settlement to the Inquiry Official or the
competent official by fixing a settlement rule or any conditions as the Settlement
Commission my deem proper.
When the offender has paid the fine as stipulate, the case shall be deemed settled
under the Criminal Procedure Code.

The settlement rule mentioned in section 84 is a list of violations of the Immigration Act which can be settled with a fixed fine as shown on that list, and overstaying is one of these violations. A number of laws allow for the establishment of settlement rules so as not to overload the courts which otherwise would have to deal with all these transgressions such as jaywalkers, smokers in air-conditioned restaurants, overstayers, drivers running a red light, etc.

This does not answer the question if and where your transgression and the fine got recorded and if you want the ultimate confirmation that you have no criminal record now, no police record on which it will show up if ever you should need to provide a police record, eg for employment, you can get your police record printed out for a small fee. I don't know exactly where you have to ask for it but it is probably at your local police station. Foreign teachers in Thailand need this police report and if one with an overstay fine in the past reads this he will hopefully post to confirm that this fine was not on the record.
