Hi,

I recently applied for and received a non-B single entry in Yangon. Now I'm in the process of applying for a work permit. While applicants with only one nationality wouldn't have a choice in this matter nor be able to do what I'm asking, but I was wondering if the work permit processing office needs to see a current entry stamp in your passport? The reason being is that I would like to travel out of the country on a business trip during the time my work permit is being processed therefore using another passport to enter Thailand during the time my work permit is processed, and then making a passport switch at a land border (or I might fly in and out) to the one which corresponds with my work permit once it is finished processing. If this is not possible because an entry stamp is required, then I will probably have no choice but to wait inside Thailand for the work permit to be processed first.

How long is the typical processing time in Bangkok? Do I have to go to the Din Daeng location or is the Chamchuri square location OK too?

When your entered Thailand with your single-entry non-B visa you received permission to stay for 90 days. How long is your planned trip outside Thailand? One thing is sure: you can leave Thailand only with the passport you used to enter the country, ie the passport that has your non-B visa.

If you plan to return to Thailand before the expiration of your current permission to stay, get a re-entry permit before you leave. If you plan to return later, get a new visa before you return.

You should have your passport while work permit is being processed so just get a reentry permit and make you trip and pick up work permit after you return. Unless BOI and told to use the one stop you process at Labor Office.

I was told the work permit office keeps my passport for the whole time it is being processed? Of course, if they just need to see it briefly on the date of application, then there is no issue here as I could enter on that passport. I was worried they would be keeping my passport for 1-2 weeks, i.e. the whole time it is being processed.

to the other posters, I already have a multiple re-entry permit and have used it twice already. I plan to use it a third and possibly a fourth time for short trips of about 5-7 days duration, which I was hoping to undertake while my work permit is being processed, but preferably with my passport that contains my Thai visa with me. I have already agreed upon a starting date for my work and I'm not quite sure if I will be getting my extension of stay for 1 year immediately after applying for my work permit or not. In any case, can anyone advise how long the extension of stay takes? Can it be applied for at the same time as the work permit at the one stop service center?

They don't keep your passport during work permit application period.

You have to apply for work permit first. Does company have BOI privileges for one stop?

Good to know; in which case I should be able to travel during the work permit processing time.

Not to my knowledge; what are the conditions necessary to receive BOI privileges?

OK.

I've been told to do my application at the Din Daeng service center. However, I'm a bit concerned as my company keeps telling me that they need my passport on the 26th and I'll only get it back on December 3rd. During this time, I'm supposed to be travelling (as mentioned I already have a valid multiple re-entry permit). I plan to depart Thailand around the 27th or 28th and only return on the 8th, shortly before commencing my new role.

I have offered to do the processing myself with their paperwork - can you confirm that once the work permit application is submitted, that the work permit office only needs to sight my passport, perhaps keeping some photocopies after which it is returned to me? I really need to travel for business and my plans would be greatly jeopardized if I had to wait in Thailand due to not having a passport for a week doing nothing.

They only need to see your passport on the day you apply and the day you pick it up. They do not keep it. As has been said before.

OK thanks for the clarification. My company obviously gave me some incorrect information. I can now proceed with my o/s trip then. Can I just pick up my work permit sometime later, if I'm only going to be back like a week after it's finished? In any case, I will pick it up prior to starting work with them.

No problem, you don't have to collect the WP straight away, in my area they give you a phone number to call and check when it's ready and it's never a problem if you then pick it up a few days later.

As this a new application, they may first want to see your Non 'B' Entry stamp/visa before they complete the WP processing, you then pick the actual WP4 Blue Booklet up a few days later when it's been signed, etc (in my area I recollect that you have up to 4 weeks from the issue of the WP3/WP1 receipt to produce the visa, but I can't find this written anywhere).

There is also a place on the WP3/WP1 receipt where a collection date can be written in.

Call in and ask your local labour dept if they have any fixed time period/limits for showing the entry stamp plus WP collection.

I went in and asked the labour office, located inside the ministry of labour yesterday. They confirmed that they only needed to sight my original passport with valid non-B visa. Nothing was mentioned about 4 weeks being needed; I was previously told a week by my company but the lady behind the counter mentioned she could only give an accurate time frame for processing upon seeing the rest of my documents. In any case, she would like to see my passport again at the time of launching the application. Also, how many reference letters do they need? 2? 3?

Now how about the 1-year extension? When is that done? I guess the work permit needs to be issued first, right?

For a 1 year extension you indeed will first need the work permit.

How long does it take to do the 1-year extension? Can it be finished the same day of application after obtaining the work permit?

Posted

The extension will normally be done on the same day you apply. But dependent upon companies business history some offices will give a 30 day under consideration stamp and you have to go back for the extension stamp.

Is travel permitted during the under consideration period? I'm assuming the immigration bureau doesn't need to keep my passport during the processing period?
