Laptop memory

Featured Replies

My step-daughters told me that her old laptop, a Dell Inspiron 6400 (T2130 processor), was running very slow. I bought it for her some 4-5 years ago when she went to study in the UK, so it hasn't done that bad. I've fiddled and it's now running somewhat faster.

Now it's running W7 Ultimate but only has 2*512MBs of RAM. The RAM is PC2-4200. I've tried the RAM which is in my laptop, 1GB of PC2-6400 and 2GBs of PC2-5300 in it ... it doesn't fly but is much faster.

So, as it could die anytime I guess, I'm just looking for some 2nd hand RAM. Maybe 2*1GBs or a 2GB and a 1GB, or maybe just a 2GB.

Could anyone give me an idea of what is a fair price to pay at one of the small computer shops please ... just to stop me getting completely stitched up ... thanks

Since the RAM is still available new the second-hand prices should not have gone through the roof, yet. Older memory definitely attracts premium prices, particularly in the larger sizes.

The outlets on the upper floors of Zeer seem to have the best choice of used RAM, take the machine along to ensure the memory works in it (and that it works at all).

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

I noticed some of the Zeer shops mentioned by Crossy have some new as in never used Lenovo RAM for sale that may be suitable. Don't expect used prices to be heavily discounted from buying new at JIB, Banana IT etc and if you want 2GB modules then you will be lucky to get more than 200 baht off the new price so be sure you check what prices are for new before buying used. Some items can be bargains at the used outlets while others you are better off buying new for a full warranty.

If you know anyone in the UK you can obtain 2 x1 GB for £9.99(500 baht)

Though I think that machine can actually take 4GB of RAM. Your possibly dodgy copy of Ultimate might not be helpful. smile.png

Can be updated at no cost.

Well it seems to be working fine now. I just bought 2GBs for 950Baht (new) ... Team Group Inc. had never heard of them but they get a reasonable mention on google and it has a lifetime warranty.

It is not dodgy!! ... My step daughter bought it via a scheme for University students whilst doing her MSc in the UK (she actually got a first) ... she also got a copy of Office Enterprise 2007 ... Both very cheap ... ok it says not for distribution outside of Europe, the Middle East, or Africa. I loaded it for her when she came back about three years ago now ... initially the m/c had XP.

I have actually re-loaded it and validated it again since initial installation without problems. I actually bought my copy of W7 Ultimate from PC World ... they are in the UK ... cost me around GBP 160!!!! all my software is original ... Mr Crossy will vouch for that......................... well almost, she actually managed to get two copies of Office Enterprise (and of course two keys) so I have the other copy on my laptop wink.png

Thanks guys ........... I'm happy now and got away reasonably cheap ... not like her MSc!!!!!!!! smile.png

Sorry about that....I jumped to a conclusion. Thailand...Windows 7 Ultimate.

I know about the Ultimate Steal program, though it was usually Office 2007 Ultimate rather than Enterprise that went with the program.
