Technical School Right For Me?

Featured Replies

New on this board...

I have an offer to teach English at a Northeast Tech School for US$500/month, 1 year commitment. Room and food paid. R/T to United States paid.

Does this sound like a good deal?

If not, what would be an adequate wage for this job? I would be in class 20hrs/wk.

I have a BA in Communications and some teaching experience (technical trainer).

Have you looked at current exchange rates? :o

You might want to rethink things for that salary...

U.S. Dollar Exchange

Rate Thai Baht

USD X 500 May 8 = 37.775 = 18,887.50 Thai Baht

It ain't jack sh!t. The North East is cheap, but that is a low salary. You should get at least 25,000 baht per month; at least. Keep in mind that the accommodation and food in the N.E. of the country is very cheap, so they're not doing you much of favor by including room and food. The round trip airfare is nice though. If you're looking to just have a first experience of teaching in Thailand, it might be ok.

Are you talking about Northeast Technical School in Khon Kaen?

The same people own that, Northeast University and Northeast Kindergarten.

I know someone who worked at NK and there was a problem getting a work permit.

That's low for pay for Khon Kaen.

I worked in a technical school in Isarn. The pay is crap but the benefits can be good. I worked 4 days a week, finishing early enabling me to do evening work, and weekend work. I earned about 60,000 a month for doing very little.

You have to know how to work with Thai government workers - not saying no, but saying yes and never doing the extras that they want.
