ALCOHOL makes an ideal substitute for happiness.

And another one from Viz that could well apply to Thailand ....

*DON'T waste money on a new car with air-conditioning. Simply buy one that has been in a 'death crash' and let the ghosts keep you cool.

If the police knock on your door asking you to open it, you are not obliged to open it. Opening the door is equivalent to allowing them in and they may come in at that point and do as they please. Forget about search warrants.

In the event you are ever whisked to the police station and your passport withheld, remember that it's possible the police's demand for money might only be a bluff (extortion). If unsure and you're not willing to negotiate, one of the most well known law firms that is popular with expats is Magna Carta. Good to keep their phone number in your phone.

Interesting you should mention this. I was with a friend this week who's good friend owns a bar. Police are always harassing bars owners for one thing or another. I guess the music copyright police stopped by and wanted 100k. Extortion, pure and simple. He refused, so was taken to jail. Lots of attempts to get him to pay, he refused. 3 days later, he was let out and the court fined him 2k. Max amount the court can fine.

But, according to this bar owner, it was so horrible in the jail, next time he'll just pay the fine. Ugh.

Can we please try and stay on topic folks? The thread started with some great advice regarding Pattaya Survival Tips and tricks but somehow got onto ladyboys and a bunch of other dribble.

eg: I don't think that buying a car that was in a death accident and has ghosts to keep you cool to save on buying a car with air-conditioning has much to do with Pattaya do you?

Big C sells big nylon bags for 50 baht. I bought 2 and keep 1 in my motorbike. When going to Makro, it's great to stuff all my purchases in the bag.

when traveling back to your country, don't forget to enable international roaming (voice & sms) on your Thai SIM before leaving.

If you get into an accident on your bike, TAKE THE KEYS OUT OF YOUR BIKE AND PUT THEM IN YOUR POCKET ASAP. Many Thais (citizens or police) will try to grab your keys to prevent you from leaving so that they can try to get money from you. So watch your keys or they WILL take them right out of your bike!!!!!
