Where can I buy secondhand furniture and household fittings?

I have been here a few weeks and have been getting aquainted with the town. What has surprised me is that there does not seem to be any secondhand furniture shops. I am looking for good quality secondhand cupboards, a spare bed, etc. I am sure i must be missing something here.

I have looked all over the place, to no avail. Help!

PS I have looked at the Chiang Mai section of the classified ads on ThaiVisa but it seems to be almost all property rentals and sales, with very little else. Is there anywhere else that I should be looking on-line? (actually, I prefer real shops if anyone knows of any, but on-line if not) wai2.gif

I am afraid that secondhand furniture shops are few and far between, and those that do exist are mostly selling junk. The ones that I am aware of are on the road that runs from the NE corner of the moat up towards Tesco Kamtieng. You can also find secondhand furniture and all sorts on the Sunday morning market that runs along the side of Prince Royal College (close to Mc Cormick hospital), starts about 9am (ish).

For online their is of course ThaiVisa, as you said. If you do Facebook then there are a couple of fairly active Facebook pages where you might find something that you are looking for. One is called "seconhand" and the other "Secondhand" Chiang Mai.

If you don't do Facebook then another good choice is www.secondhandchiangmai.com - that one has quite a lot of items for sale, and no property ads getting in the way (praise be - I hate them too!!).

In all cases it's a case of check in regularly - the bargains always go fast...

Happy Hunting - see you down the Sunday Market.

My experience of second hand shops in my early days here in Thailand is that buying second hand is no bargain. Almost the same price to buy new. Even folks selling up and leaving Thailand expect quite unrealistic prices. My rule of thumb is that once you buy some piece of household items then it's worth half the price you paid if you want to sell the next year. Mind you a lot of folks are shocked when I tell them that sad.png

You can also list what you are looking for and people might send you PMs with offers.

That's a really good idea.

Just say where can I buy a used...........

And someone might have one.

Forget the 2nd hand shops (there are dozens). The items are left out under outdoor buildings with roofs only and are always moldy. And, all of the places ask ridiculous prices. We went to one place that had dozens of old doors. The lady wanted 6,000 Baht for an old, used door! We asked for a discount and she said 5,950 Baht and walked away. I'm not joking. There are many good websites that offer used furniture at more realistic prices. Ask a Thai friend to help.

I've had similar experiences and some even want to charge more than what I'd pay new.

you can get a new bed and mattress for 5k in many furniture shops.

No doubt - but the mattress will not have springs and be as hard as a rock. I've been there, done that, big mistake.
