  • As as usual miss information. In order to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) from ANY Land Transport Department (ITD) you need a 5 year Thai driving license not I repeat not a one year, only a 5 year.

I can get an IDL in the UK which allows me to drive in Thailand with proof of my UK licence, if I got a Thai IDL in Thailand, I'm pretty sure it would not allow me as a UK citizen to drive on a Thai IDL in the UK...?????

What countries if I got a Thai one, would it allow me to drive in..Or am I better off with a UK IDL compared to a Thai IDL, I suspect that I'm better off with my UK one...????

You can only get an IDP in Thailand if you have a 5 year Thai dl. and that new dl is a smart card which members on this forum have used to drive and rent cars in the UK and the US with no idp.

Google is your friend

The basic info is correct but nomenclature makes it suspect. International Driving License are illegal, International Driving Permits are legal. The Thai LTD only issues an IDP on a five year license.

Why would you not allowed to drive in the UL on a Thai DL.

I used my Thai DL to rent a car in Holland without any problem. ( No IDL required )

They informed me that as long the DL has English translation on it it is fine to use it.

Some of the large car rental companies in Asean require an IDL, not talking about EU.

Strange, since IDL's don't even exist.

The mechanics of the process were quite simple but it was the waitng time between each one that stretched the time. Hand over paperwork and sign one form 2 to 3 minutes then told come back in one hour. Went back after one hour and had to wait a good bit longer to sign another sheet, wait in a queue for 20/30 minutes to pay 505 baht and told come back after lunch time ! Went back after lunch time and waited about 30 minutes to get the licence.

The place was extremely busy and I think they fell into the trap of trying to serve everyone at once and just kept getting themselves confused.

I had nothing else to do that day anyway.smile.png
