It depends on the species, the Malaysian snail eating turtle is still pretty common here though they are endangered, those are the brown to black one you see in the fresh markets, if it is a land turtle, tortoise quite rare and like most asian turtles is headed for extinction . If you google turtles of Thailand you may see a picture of what you saw.

And not only that.....

I googled "can turtles eat rice"

It says yes if it is boiled rice, but 15% of their diet needs to be veggies

They like fruit, insects, worms flies....and no doubt polished concrete but as for a rice field no reference whatsoever.

I suggest you get back in the field and retrieve said creature and give it a proper meal.

Never mind eric I am sure you will get a friend one day.

Red-eared sliders are common and can grow to about 12":

They are the norway rats of the turtle world, originally from the usa and spread to every tropical and temperate country from the pet trade and turtle farms, they are hardy and adaptable omnivores that displace the native species. If you like to catch and eat turtles, this is the one to eat and leave the native species.
