BANGKOK: -- No animal-disease outbreaks have been found on farms around the country, including bird-flu, the Livestock Department said yesterday.

Chinese health authorities on Wednesday reported that a 73-year-old woman in Nanchang, capital of the southeastern province of Jiangxi, had died of the H10N8 bird-flu virus, the first such case in the country.

Tritsadee Chaosuanchareon, head of the Thai Livestock Department, said there had been no reports of the virus spreading to any farms in this country.

"Japan just recently allowed us to export fresh poultry," he noted.

Generally, he said, some farm animals could become ill during winter because of the cold weather.

In a related development, the Public Health Ministry said on Thursday there had been no reports of human infections with the H10N8 bird-flu virus in Thailand. China's National Health and Family Planning Commission reported that the woman in Nanchang had visited poultry markets. She was admitted to hospital on November 30 and died on December 6 after suffering with severe pneumonia.

Chinese health authorities have closely monitored her family for any flu-like symptoms.

The Thai Public Health Ministry's permanent secretary, Dr Narong Sahamethaphat, said an outbreak of a different strain of avian influenza, H5N1, had been reported in Thailand from 2004 to 2006. To date, there has been no report H10N8 spreading here.

According to the World Health Organisation, 648 people have been infected with the H5N1 bird-flu virus since 2003 and there have been 384 deaths in 15 countries.

About 137 people were infected with the H7N9 bird-flu virus, with 45 deaths, between March and October this year in mainland China and Taiwan.

That was quick! I passed a few farms the other day and didn't see a single chick holding up a H10N8 sign.

The last time bird flu was on going it was also denied and a gentleman called Newin said anyone said there was bird flu in Thailand wasn't patriotic.

A month later the inspection official concerned admitted he had been lying to protect the chicken export industry.

Well I can confirm that tests were carried out. About 2 months ago a bloke from the local agricultural dept. took blood samples from several of my turkeys.

Turns to his second in command and says;

"You see any H10N8 ?"

"Nope, you?"

"Nope, you?"
