Election Commission won’t give up registering candidates for Feb 2 polls
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Dec 24 – The Election Commission (EC) will meet urgently this morning to review the registration process for election candidates but insisted it will continue its task despite obstruction by anti-government protesters.

Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, EC commissioner in charge of election administration, said the second day of registration for party-listed candidates for the February 2 general elections will be held at the Thai-Japanese Stadium, Din Daeng.

The registration is open as planned until Friday.

Protesters have blocked the registration building in the stadium compound since Sunday night, barring officials and the media from entering the property yesterday.

Officials in charge of the registration will meet at the EC office on Chaeng Wattana Road this morning and go to the Thai-Japanese stadium together to see if they will be allowed to enter the building. (MCOT online news)

Protesters staying put at Bangkok Youth Center

BANGKOK, 20 December 2013 (NNT) – Anti-government protesters are reportedly staying put at Bangkok Youth Center. The center is currently playing host to the registration of electoral candidates for the party-list system.

The protesters who call themselves People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) have completely sealed off all entrances and exits to Bangkok Youth Center, generally known as Thai-Japanese Stadium, in a bid to bar all candidates from signing up for the general election.

It is reported that the protesters are likely stay there to cause disturbances until Friday when the registration period is over.

The Election Commission (EC) earlier announced that it would continue the registration process until this Friday as planned and would not relocate the venue despite obstruction from the protesters.

Meanwhile, The Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) urged the PDRC to cease all attempts to interrupt the registration, adding that such attempts were illegal and violators could face serious charges.

Revenue Department to consider collecting taxes from tutorial schools

BANGKOK, 24 Dec 2013, (NNT) - The Revenue Department is considering collecting taxes from tutorial schools beginning next year.

Mr. Suttichai Sangkamanee, Revenue Department Director-General, on Monday made the announcement after a meeting on the 2014 tax collecting directions. According to him, the department is planning to expand the nation's tax base to include cram schools, which have been exempted from paying corporate income tax and personal income tax as well as value-added tax for quite a considerable amount of time.

It has been debated for long while whether or not the excemptions should be allowed to continue. The department expects to reach a conclusion by the end of 2014, he said.

If his department is to start collecting taxes from these schools, it will rely on the Education Ministry’s guidelines to determine the income level of each tutorial school and its size of operation to calculate the amount of tax a school has to pay annually.

He believed the move could be done without having to amend the law.

Mr. Suttichai pointed out that the reason cram schools have been exempted from taxes is that such schools in the past were aimed at promoting and improving students’ academic performances. However, he expressed his concerns over the quality of such tutorial schools of late, particularly questioning the effectiveness of having students learn from a video-tape-recorded lessons, which is widely used by several cram schools.

TDRI chief supports pre-election reforms

BANGKOK: -- Thailand Development Research Institute President Somkiat Tangkitvanich supports reforms before the election, saying any government has never been fully committed to reforms.

In the six-points proposal, he said that there was no progress from the reform council set up by the Yingluck government. Meanwhile, the Abhisit government also established two reform councils, but their suggestions have never been implemented.

"All this convinces the public that any government in power does not voluntarily support reforms," he said.

He also said that through the proposal for reforms, the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) may just want to create political vacuum, given that several proposals cannot be completed quickly and outside parties are shunned from taking part. The proecess to create "absolute democracy" contradicts the democratic doctrine.

Car Crash Kills 3 Anti-Govt Protesters

BANGKOK: -- A pick-up truck carrying anti-government protesters has crashed into a flyover bridge in Chumpon province, killing three.

The incident took place yesterday at 05.00, rescue workers said.

Police investigation suggests that a total of 9 people were on the vehicle when the accident took place, all of them anti-government protesters who were returning from the major rally organised by People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) in Bangkok to their home province in Surat Thani.

Two people died at the scene and another victim died at hospital, police said. Other passengers were reportedly severely injured.

Police believe the driver, Mr. Niphon (surname not immediately known), was exhausted by the political rally he attended throughout the day, and dozed off behind the wheel on the highway, causing the vehicle to smash into a pillar of a flyover bridge.
