F1 champion Michael Schumacher in coma after ski accident

GRENOBLE, FRANCE (BNO NEWS) -- Retired German racing driver Michael Schumacher, the most successful driver in Formula One history, was in a coma Sunday after suffering a serious head injury in a skiing accident in southeastern France, hospital officials said. He remains in a critical condition.

The accident happened at about 11:07 a.m. local time on Sunday while Schumacher, 44, was skiing with his family on the slopes of the French Alps in Meribel. First responders were at the scene within eight minutes before he was airlifted to a hospital in the nearby town of Moutiers while still conscious.

But Schumacher's condition worsened and he was taken to the University Hospital in Grenoble, where he arrived at 12:40 p.m. "He suffered a serious head injury with coma on his arrival, which required immediate neurosurgical intervention. He remains in a critical condition," the hospital said in a press statement late on Sunday, ending hours of uncertainty.

A statement from Schumacher's management confirmed the information, but provided no new information. "We ask for understanding that we cannot give continuous information about his health," his spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said earlier, adding that the retired racing legend was wearing a helmet and that no other persons were involved in his fall.

Schumacher, with 90 wins, 68 pole positions, 75 fastest laps, 1354 points and seven world titles, is regarded by many as the greatest Formula One driver of all time. He first retired after winning the 2006 Italian Grand Prix but returned to Formula One in February 2010, only to retire for a second time after finishing in 14th position at the Brazilian Grand Prix in November 2012.

History is consistent with evacuation of sub dural hematoma. Can have good prognosis/recovery. A SDH can cause loss of consiousness = coma.

Sad for a guy that spent much of his life at 200 mph.(approx)

That wasn't the case with Natasha Richardson who also had a similar skiing accident in 2009 and even got up and laughed directly after it but sadly died two days later

All the best for a speedy recovery Schu.

Your attitude when racing may not have made you the most popular man in the paddock; especially with Graham Hill, but you are one of the greats.

With a fine sense of humour away from the track as well.

He was not really the Stig, as we all know, and was there because Ferrari wouldn't let anyone else drive an FXX round the Top Gear Track.

Hope he pulls through...

Never was a fan, (was patriotic and supported DC).

I am sure his helmet saved his life, well at least gave him a fighting chance, listening to Eddie Jorden this morning he pointed out Micheal would never ski during his F1 years for fear of injuring himself.

Michael Schumacher ski helmet camera 'examined'
Investigators in France are examining a camera which had been fixed to the ski helmet of injured Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher, media reports say.
Authorities were hoping the device may reveal clues about the circumstances of his skiing accident in the French Alps, a source told the AFP news agency.
Police also interviewed Schumacher's teenage son, who witnessed the crash.

"critical but stable"

As a F1 fan I shamefully admit that there was many a Grand Prix where I was wishing a tier would blow and he would go spinning out, now I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Still not much news again today.

Sky news reports:

Family of Michael Schumacher rubbish reports 'he is out of danger'

Speaking outside the hospital former F1 driver Philippe Strieff told reporters: "I'm not a doctor, I'm repeating what Gerard Saillant (surgeon and friend of the Schumacher family) told me.

"He said it is a serious condition but his life is not in danger anymore, thankfully. He is such a healthy man. He's 45, he's young and has always been very fit. He is in top shape physically so there are no reasons why he would not make it."

But the claim drew a furious reaction from Schumacher's management team who insist only official statements released on their behalf should be given credence.

Maybe Philippe misunderstood what Gerard said.

Or should the headline have read "Michael Schumachers Management team rubbish reports he is out of danger"

seems to me they are trying to manipulate the information the press gets.

I can't believe that even though the family have made it clear that they alone will release any relevant information, the German magazines and English rags insist on writing about it.

And they can make up what they like by writing "sources claimed".
