I have started again to go for 20km cycle ride early each morning (currently living up country)

The issues is that its seems any route I take brings me into conflict with the odd bad tempered Soi Dog.

Shooshing them away with my foot seems to encourage them more and is unsafe, and caring a bamboo stick with me is not practical clearly.

Therefore does anyone know of a Thailand based online store where I might purchase a cheap but effective extendable baton to wrap these mutts on the snout as and if required.

If you are in Bangkok, they are sold on Sukhumvit from Soi 5 all the way till Soi 19.

Alternatively, you also can get one at the road-side store outside the KFC on Silom, right at the bottom of Sala Daeng BTS station.

On-line ... no idea.

However if you are in Bangkok, or probably any major tourist city, available on the street.

In Bangkok, Lower Sukhumvit (e.g. NANA BTS) will sell them, along with knuckle dusters etc.

I purchased mine in Pattaya 12 years ago and have introduced it to a great many soi dogs, it is effective and served that purpose, I do not remember what it cost but it was not expensive.

Cheers

I put a stick on my cross bar, as they dont have those batons up here either, will get one on my next visit to the city though, many uses.

Letting the soidogs bite innocent bikers is more humane? Or causing accidents with motorbikes/cars. My wife doesn't dare to walk to places if there are soidogs, so she goes by car. Is that humane?

They don't attack me because i have no fear at all for them but if they did attack me then i would come back with a weapon and it was their last day.

I do love dogs though, but no soidogs.

I assumed you were looking to ward off, prevent an actual attack, not take revenge after the fact.

As those discussions point out - and you imply yourself - it is the fear shown that enables them to attack, so showing no fear, dominating the situation is 99% of the time sufficient solution.

If you want to enable your wife to walk in particular areas without fear, just poison the dogs (humanely) when no one is looking, problem solved.

If you just want to protect yourself further while ranging widely on a bike, the threads I gave you will give you better solutions than a heavy metal club.

I eventually attacked a dog back and ever since then any dog ANYWHERE has not bothered me again aggressively. Sure, I get a bark once in awhile but no approaching.

They can sense whether you are willing to retaliate.

In my case and I suspect a few others, the hesitation shown and why these dogs are so bothersome, is due to the fact that somebody is always there watching. A Thai is always there on a motorbike or porch watching how you interact with the dog, or just watching you period.

You become this evil farang who is mean to the dog or violent, and dares to become angry which is taboo. So many people slither away and act all docile which makes the dog all the more confident and they can sense it.

Stuff like this sold at the stalls along tourist areas isn't legal, that's why they're being sold there, under the protection of the sponsoring BiB - sex toys, fake viagra, brass knuckles tasers etc. . .

I used to get plagued by dogs snapping at my heels when I went out on early morning marathon training runs , until a fellow runner (Thai) informed me that he carried with him on his runs a small high intensity bike light (ie lezyne microlite) which he would shine in the general direction of the dog/s , the dog could not resist looking at the light and would be momentarily blinded by it , even in daylight.

Turned out to be good advice.

Bunch of lunatics in this thread hitting dogs with batons. Shameful.

I disagree.

Take the OP off the bicycle for a moment.

The dog is most likely rabid because the OP is passing through the dog's defined territory.

He's now walking with his 2 year old on the footpath and the dog starts again.

If it's a choice between scaring the young child shitless or, even worse, attacked, hand me that baton forthwith and be quick about it.

Do dogs attack kids ... sure.

We had to take one of the Farm kids to the clinic for 5 days of injections because of a dog bite recently.

Just a word to all those moral crusaders out there.

The OP is not the aggressor here, he's enquiring about a defensive tactic to ward off an unprovoked attack.

The OP is not asking your moral judgement, he's enquiring where to buy something.

Yep, I know it's a Public Forum, but if the social welfare of soi Dogs is your thing ... great, but start your own thread about it and don't start to clamber on this and lecture from the moral high ground here.

... and just before you start to try and name and shame me as a dog hater

... have a read of this dearly-departed and i-never-really-appreciated-dogs-until

.

Sure if we're talking about actual biting attacks and defending yourself go for it slit its throat no problem, even without the child or walking scenario.

However when biking I haven't come across this myself, usually just aggressive posturing easily solved by fearlessly facing them down and establishing dominance.

I think commenting on weapon overkill is appropriate - if a Yank was going on about carrying their revolver for this purpose would you let it slide?

The dogs on the streets are not all soidogs, many have a Thai owner who thinks it is cool to have those dogs running around his/her property.

When i walk outside our moobaan there are loads of dogs on the streets who will bark and come to me. When i show no fear they will run away and many times the old lady's who are selling banana's in front of their houses call the dogs to come inside. They wait with that call untill i am very close to their shop so they hope i will be a customer and buy the banana's. If they were decent people they would call the dogs before they start barking and approaching me but they don't do that. They like it when their dogs guard the street and also like to show you that they controll those dogs to call them inside.

When i am on the motorbike and they come to close to me i just lift my leg so i can kick them. I have seen Thai do that as well and that works great. If you lift your leg they will immediately back off. Also using the horn works.

I wonder what will happen if a dog bites a farang, farang calls the police and goes to the hospital 5 times for injections. The bill of those injections will be presented to the dog-owner.I bet the owner will say that it is not their dog who bit.

I got bitten by a small shitzu who came in my garden every day to mess up my stuff. I grabbed him a few times and chased him back to his owner when he ran away from me. When he had bitten me i went to the owner and asked if the dog was vaccinated or i had to go to Bungumrad hospital on her account. She said it was vaccinated, paid the damage her dog made in my garden and told us she would bring the dog back to the countryside-family.

I really can't understand farang who think it is great to see all those dogs running around without their owners. I bet they don't even live in Thailand themselves. If you live here and see how your wife/family is scared for those dirty monsters then you might think twice before posting that it is cruel to kick those dogs.

The most fear i have is for fighting dogs, when they fight they run around like crazy, i have seen fighting dogs running full speed onto a busy road full of traffic. I also saw them running on the road right in front of my motorbike wheels. When they are fighting they don't care for anything and just run like hell. People here ride around on motorbikes with 4-5 people on 1 bike and have baby's on their arms as well. They can't stop fast for dogs running onto the road.

Personally lock up the back wheel and stare the dog(s) down. They'll poo themselves and back off. There's a lot to be said for not showing any fear; they can actually smell that stuff like the dude on Jeepers Creepers. Having a stick of some sort clipped to the bike and lifting it without swinging might also put them off. The batons, bits& bobs I often see in those small stalls in the downstairs bit in the likes of Tesco, Big C..

*sigh* ... a gun is an attack weapon because it can kill well beyond the attack range of a dog.

It was a stupid clumsy analogy ... and you know it. And if you ask me ... if guns is the answer, it's a very silly question that was asked ... but we digress.

Did you not read the bit where the dog attacked the child at the Farm and we had to take him for 5 consecutive days to the Clinic for the rabies shot.

The OP, the cycilist, just wants to enjoy his ride ... he's not chasing them, not hunting them ... but he wants a deterrent if they attack him while he is riding ... fine by me.
