Cataract surgery: What to expect?

Featured Replies

I'm scheduled to have cataract surgery next month. I've read information on this type of operation on the Internet, but I want to know what other people have experienced after the operation.

What should I expect?

What should I do and not do?
How best should I take care of myself after the operation?

And I'm open to any other advise that can offered by someone who has gone through this operation.

About me? Highly myopic (R: -8+ L: -10+) with astigmatism, and at my age I need lens adjustment for reading (Presbyopia) too. Currently I have Verilux lens in my glasses including correction for astigmatism.

Now, big question.
Once the first lens is taken out and replaced, what should I expect? I know I'll need to have the len in my glasses replaced with a 'clear' lens. And then I wait to heal. How long? What can I do and not do? When should I expect to be able to get a 'refraction' of a new lens for my glasses (I'm having a 'simple' lens replacement, so I will need to still wear glasses that correct of astigmatism and presbyopia. Why? I'm not independently wealthy. I'm on a fixed income and this is what I can do.)

When it's time to have the second lens replace, the same questions apply.

I just would like to hear others experience with cataract operations. Does this worry me? Yeah! It does. But my current inability to see sufficiently worries me more. This is genetics. This happens in my family and need to be taken care of. I just want to know what to expect.

A friend of mine here in Chiang mai had one of his eye done and he is very happy with the result he can see clearer and sharper now in the eye he had surgery on. He just followed the Drs. advice and preformed all after surgery treatment they advised.

As you will require glasses even after surgery that will likely have to wait until several months after the second eye operation (at least that was case for my wife last year (but her healing was slower than many). I guess you could take a lens out of present pair if you want to use them. They do want to wait for your eyes to adjust before making a new prescription (several months). But even without glasses her vision was better than with the cataracts so expect it will not be a big problem. First night is covered and you return next day to remove bandage and start eye drops for several weeks and for first week they advise using plastic cover for sleeping to prevent any turn over onto eye. Several trips will be made to check healing.
