BANGKOK, Jan 20 – The blockade of government-run Kurusapa printing shop, responsible for printing election ballots, will not jeopardise the approaching election, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana has reassured.

The nationwide election is set for Feb 2 while the advance balloting is scheduled for Jan 26.

Mr Pongthep said ballots have been distributed to polling constituencies throughout the country.

He was confident that the January 26 advance election and the Feb 2 general election will be held smoothly and the government would be willing to support or facilitate the polls by assigning police and military personnel to guard polling booths.

He said it would be impossible to follow a recommendation by the Election Commission (EC) to hold a referendum on whether the election should be postponed.

A referendum takes at least 90 days but the election must be held within 60 days (after the House dissolution), said Mr Pongthep.

He said the government has not received the EC’s invitation to the prime minister to hold talks on its proposed delay of the election.

Prompong Nopparit, Pheu Thai Party spokesman, said the protesters’ closure of Kurusapa printing shop was an attempt to disrupt the election – a legal offence for obstructing democracy.

He called on the EC’s stricter measures to guard the government printing shop.

He also charged the EC with failing to take action against protesters, adding that he would ask the Council of State to investigate the behaviour of an EC member, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, who joined the anti-government protest. (MCOT online news)

They just don't get it do they.

Well there is the issue that another hefty chunk of money is being thrown into this farce, so they will obviously be bleeding that for all its worth.

He said that a referendum amongst the people was impossible. Why? Because the election has to take place in 60 days...?! If a decision was made to carry out a referendum on the election, then that would clearly override the 60-day limitation...!

Anyway, I am looking forward to the pending court decision on the huge numbers of politicians, which should ultimately quash any further talk of elections in February.

Does nobody own or know how to use a phone? Good grief, what utter stupidity and incompetence.

Thailand truely deserves the government they elect and they seem intent to keep electing it until Thailand is in tatters. Oh well, not long now anyway.

No one seems to ask why they are going ahead with an election tht even if they win will not give the enough seats to form a government

This is not about an elections

This is to get an excuse to say that they are good guys and every one else is bad

and who cares if the money they waste could have been used to pat Rice Farmers

Why would anyone be so stupid as to have a referendum on whether to postpone the election. Can you imagine any other country in the world (that runs elections) saying "erm , ladies and gentlemen, an election is due on Feb 2, but we wonder if you would like to postpone it till April 1st, All Fools Day, and then, once that referendum is finished, we will REALLY know whether to have an election."

Of course, the longer you postpone, the more time the Yellows have to fk the place up, well and truly.

He said the government has not received the EC’s invitation to the prime minister to hold talks on its proposed delay of the election.

And the EC says they have sent several letters and phoned daily and got no reply.

Somebody is telling lies, you only get one guess as to who it might be.

Investigate, then prosecute to the full extent of the law.

These people need to be neutral to do their jobs.... which by the way they clearly are not doing. They are either completely incompotent or yellow shirt legal terrorists.

So you think that the election is a waste of money, but a referendum whether to hold one is not?

And you should learn how to read properly. They say it takes 90 days to prepare a referendum, when the election is 60 days away.

Well since your so demanding that folks be investigated and prosecuted you might like to lead the cry for the allegations about the puppet to be investigated thoroughly and demand appropriate prosecution.

Did you yell and demand punishment for not being neutral when the house speaker totally gagged the opposition from speaking on several occasions?

Calm down and stay on topic please.

So they convene the election and get a result...protest going to stop?

It would give the government a clear mandate to clear this minority mob off the street by any means possible.

The have the means to move them and it is only careful politics that is leaving them out there. to

a. show the world how fair the government is

b. show the world that the Army and Courts are complicit in this....

c. keep the press focus on Suthep as he boils over, changes his mind, policies, deadlines.

d. build up a well of support for getting the mob off the street the longer it goes on

e. allow the backers of this coup to drain their coffers on it and not be able to come back and fight another day

d. gain worldwide sympathy as democracy in danger in thailand. - (Yingluk achieved this already)

f. give the country time to wonder what it would be like if the country were to be subject to mob beatings for dissent.

Quote this morning.. "3 brigades of angry girl scouts could have cleared Asoke out this morning." And it was probably true.

If or when the day comes to move them on.. they'll be moved on. In the meantime, enjoy a taste of Suthep land. Remember the white masks? who or Pitak Siam? that was the last 2 failed coup attempts in the past 2 years. This is attempt number 3 since Yingluk was PM..

What it tells you is that the days of Coups are over!!! Most realise that nothing could be governed by a Coup and the country would suffer. the Army don't need worry about the elites much longer as their power and money are waning due to them continually promoting street demos and coups.

Well thought out and well said.

Will stand the test of time and.the inevitable off the mark insults of the copy and paste crowd.

If and when Thailand decides to do away with recycled politicians from both ends and their kinsman and kinsladies, I ll strongly suggest that all senior civil servants, these ones that always takes sides and fan flames of disruption, be made to go away too.
