I am transferring my retirement extension of stay to a new passport.

The current extension ends when my old passport expires -- 6 months before my regular yearly renewal date (on my birthday). Immigration said rolling it over to the new passport and getting the full one-year term would be automatic.

Does anybody know if this requries paperwork (bank statement, request for extension, picture?) Or is the pro forma transfer letter from the embassy (and the old and new passports) enough?

Thanks, Retiree

You will only need this form Transfer Stamp to a New Passport Form . Plus copies of both passport photo pages and old passport visa, entry stamp. extension stamp and TM6 departure card.

They will stamp the remainder of your extension in your new passport since you did your extension before they changed the rules in August of last year.

Yes, I did my 9th (or maybe 10th) yearly extension last July. Can you tell me how they changed the rules?

Also -- dumb question, I know -- can they actually manage this in Lad Phrao without access to the jumbo file that has my last 20 years of work, then retirement, filings?

Thanks, Retiree

New rules are that if your passport is valid for less than one year your extension will only be valid up to the date it expires and when you get a new passport they will transfer the stamps. Then when your shortened extension ends you have to apply again for a new extension.

They don't need the file. They will go by the stamps in your passport and what is on their computer. The immigration office up here does not even pull a file when they do the extension or anything else.

Maybe you are grandfathered in I would go with the full paper work to do a new extension of stay.

Any extension done before they changed the rules will be done by the old rules. No need to take the paperwork for an extension.

Looks like I slept through last August's "New rules ..." crisis, but have found the relevant thread along with the post below, which presciently confirms your advice.

Thanks all for help, Retiree

A week or so later I went to Bangkok Immigration and they transferred the retirement extension of stay info from the old to new passport and extend the extension of stay out to the full 12 months since they had only given me 6 months extension earlier since my passport was expiring in 6 month. Piece of cake...took one simple form and about 10 minutes...no fee then.
