Red wave set to swamp Bangkok

A Short history.

Once upon a time there was a country called Thailand.

The people lived in 3 regions: North East (Thai Isaan) North ( Thai Lanna) and south ( Thai Bangkok Phuket)

Like the former Yougoslavia these diverse groups got on quite well for a very long time.

But then a major commercial dispute arose which led to blood on the streets of Bangkok.

The leader of the nation came from Thai Lanna ( Thaksin) The Bangkok Phuket Thai took him to the courts on the basis of the fact that he was practising corruption as leader whereas the Thai Bangkok Phuket argued they had had the copyright rights on corruption since before Thaksin was even born.

These legal procedings went on for several years and people started to hate each other South to North. Then the hatred spread, Foreign expats who had married southern ladies started to hate foreign men who had married into Thai Isaan families.

Sadly the hatred spread and spread because no one in Thailand at that time had read the words of Nelson Mandela: "If I hate, I am no longer a free man"

In the meantime Thaksin was sentenced to jail for breach of the corruption copyright laws.

But he developed a cunning plan in leaving the country before the lock could be turned.

He never returned, he was no simpleton and had studied the history of the Philippines and knew when the highly charismatic Benigno Aquino returned from exile he was shot getting off the plane. to make sure he was really dead they shot him again. Thaksin knew all this. So he asked his sister to act as his agent.

Then a great leader arose in the south. He decided that the Thai Lanna and the Thai Isaan should not be allowed to vote. The reasons were that it would waste their time which should be better spent tending the rice crop. There was also a suggestion that he would command them to plough up the ricefield and plant palm trees.

Finally the people of Thai Isaan and Thai Lanna became bored, frustrated and angry. Rather than listen to speeches against them and their former leader they packed their bags and decided to start their own country. it was hard work at first but they thought it better to work hard than spend the time shooting at their neighbours. However luck was to arrive in the form of peace treaties and trade agreements with China which by then had become the world's economic superpower. Touriism, agriculture, casinos and industry flourished, seeing all this the Shan State of Mynamar seceded and together with the country of Laos formed the United States of North Thailand. The people were unified, prosperous and happy.

LOL. So you are saying that Thaksin is scared of being bumped off, if he comes back, but doens't mind if his sister gets bumped off instead as his nominee. The fallacy is that he caused all the current problems by forcing the puppet government to pass his amnest bill in the dead of the night. If he had no interest in coming back, why would he have rocked the boat, rather than just sit back and rake in all the collections from controlling the government.

The Amnesty Bill is still a live bill sitting in the House like an unexploded bomb. He orders his sister to hang on until she can form a new government. Then after 60 days any bills from the last government that were rejected by the Senate may be passed into law through a simple majority vote in the Lower House. Then he comes back to see, if he is luckier than Benigno Aquino. Remember that the latter came back to the Philippines while his rival Marcos' reign of terror was going on. With his sister as PM he expects to have better security arrangements in place at the airport when he comes back to kiss the ground of the airport that earned him up to 30%.

Interesting

Now can you please tell me which group pays all the high taxes that sees the north have a reasonable life style

we live in Udon

we have electricity

we have water

we have roads to drive on

we have radio and TV

Udon is not the poor place that has nothing

but all the good things we have must be paid for by someone

Please show me links to where Tasking spent his money on the North

Not the taxes paid to the government by the people you hate

.

Interesting. Do you actually live in Thailand at all? This must be a contender for the most deluded post ever.

Have you ever been out into the countryside? In the growing season you can drive for hour after hour and see nothing but rice. That's where the real wealth of Thailand comes from. The wealthy traders in Bangkok are just parasites living off the labour of rural people while conspiring to prevent them from voting. Without Isaan, Bangkok would starve.

If you live in Udon Thani you cannot fail to have noticed that the local people pay taxes. Those that earn enough, and there are plenty in Isaan, pay income tax. Everyone pays purchase taxes. Look at your electricity and water bills, your telephone bill, your receipt from the gas station and the stores where you do your shopping, the garage where you have your car serviced and the restaurants you dine in. There is purchase tax on them.

Have you noticed all the new housing developments being built in and around Udon? In the main it is local Thais who are buying them which means they must have a good income on which they are taxed. Or do you spend your time and money In Soi Samphan?

Guess what, most of the taxes the people of Isaan pay gets spent in the greater Bangkok area. What Thaksin did was to increase the amount of government expenditure outside of the greater Bangkok area, which had been neglected by successive governments for decades. Put another way, he reduced the amount the rest of the country pays in subsidies to Bangkok. It is still 74/26 in favour of the metropolis, but that is much better than before Thaksin.

Tell that to my Thai wife parents who took a loan from the great Taskin Loan scheme

and 3 years later when the could not pay it back the government threw them out onto the street and took there homes

Yes taskin was great for issan, maybe in your dreams

1. You say the real wealth of Thailand comes from Isaan rice fields. How many rice harvests per year does Isaan have?

2. Are you aware of the vast amount of quality rice grown in the rest of Thailand particularly the Central plains north of Bangkok, with 2 to 3 annual harvests?

3. Apparently other forms of agriculture contribute to Thailand's wealth as well as fishing and shrimp farms.

I've also heard that Thailand produces a few tons of chicken and pork for export.

4. I understand Thailand makes a few trucks and cars every year. As well as a thriving electronics industry.

5.According to TAT, tourism also adds a few baht to the national income as do the world famous ladies of Isaan.

So, your claim that the real wealth of Thailand comes from Isaan rice fields, is, IMHO, somewhat skewed.

As to Bangkok starving, I somehow doubt that, but unless the government, whenever we have one, gets their priorities right and pays the "growers of rice", I can see trouble in the countryside.

Perhaps the government ought to move to Khon Kaen?

Okay, okay. How about, the people of Isaan provide the cheap labour that Bangkok needs ? Yes, tourism generates good money, and let's be honest, the ladies of Isaan are certainly a major part of that tourism.

In any capitalist society, labour is almost (or just as) as important as capital and 'brain power'. Without cheap labour (provided by Isaan and other places), the capital(money for investment) is simply NOT going to make a profit.

Does the capitalist need the cheap labour more than the cheap labour needs the capitalist ? I'm not sure. Surely, IF the cheap labourers unite, well, they can (for the time being, at least) cause a major problem by 'boycotting' the capitalist ?

It seems that the army has somewhat been brought "under control" because the generals realize that a coup would not be accepted anymore.

Any coup from the army would lead to a general uprising in the populated north.

On the other side, the courts still can be seen by many as an "independent" body not scared to involve itself with the minority trying to gain power over the majority.

As long as the courts cannot be seen as impartial by the majority of people it's difficult to blame the reds when they want to fight to protect the people's basic rights.

Let's hope that there will be no need for the reds to go at war to defend democracy... and that all those trying to overthrow democracy by any means (criminal, coup, court rulings, ...) pay for their crimes.

I dont like what you say - but I think your right - this Government will be returned to carry on corruption and bring in another amnesty bill to bring "Captain corruption" back from Dubai!! His plan cannot continue until another event happens!! This is Thailands sad future - anything else will be met with an M79 and a red riot!! - We know this but I as a Thai am proud that Thai people stood up in the street and said - "this is not democracy!!". Also did you know Thaksins neice is married to Hun Sens son? and his other neice to Myanmars leaders family? Thaksins lust for power will spill out ofThailand next time - especially now he believes he is untouchable!

We probably have a different idea of what is or is not democracy.

A minority trying to overthrow an elected government is hardly "democratic" in most people's view.

For those who want a change of government the best would be for the Dems to offer a real alternative to the majority of the people. But they just can't succeed with their current state of mind and sense of superiority.

The "corruption thing" is just an excuse for corrupt people to attack other corrupt people. There is no real meaning behind that fake fight.

If the people of Thailand want to end corruption they must join hands and pressure all those involved to end corruption. This means pressure not only politicians, but also most civil servants, business people, teachers, traffic police, neighbors, customs, forest department, friends, judges, football associations, ..., ..., you, me... That's a lot of people :)

Taking the excuse of corruption just to make the minority gain power, while most give into it, is not only useless but also laughable.

Suthep's fight is only about gaining power.

If some people's dream is to end corruption, it's going to be really hard and will not end by switching corrupt politicians with other corrupt ones.

Sneer away, Doggy. But do remember that Margaret Thatcher who as PM dragged the UK back from the edge of despair was a mere shopkeepers daughter. Like YS, she was vilified by the misogynists, elitists and ex public-school idiots in power. However, the real people loved her and she won election after election.

Firstly, Yingluck was no "mere" anything. She didn't rise up from nothing. She rose up on the back of a very wealthy brother. Without him, who would have ever heard of her?

Secondly, Thatcher was vilified because of her politics. Yingluck isn't vilified because of her politics, because she doesn't have any, much like the majority of Thai politicians. She is vilified because she is useless at her job.... again, much like the majority of Thai politicians.

Thirdly, saying that "real" people loved Thatcher suggests you think all the people who didn't love her were somehow "unreal". What a bizarre thing to say. And i suppose all those who don't love Yingluck are unreal too. Red style democracy. With us or against us. Vote for us and you'll be rewarded, don't vote for us and you are nothing. Nobodies.

A lot of real people hated her because they were working class and her monetarism, breaking of the unions, imports of cheap coal from Poland and closure of the pits etc made her perceived as a class enemy. Nevertheless she was extremely intelligent and an independent thinker who came up with policies that worked at the macro level because they were aimed largely at improving Britain's competitiveness that was at a very low ebb.

Yingluck is not very bright and not an independent thinker. Her policies are making the Thai economy, particularly the agricultural sector spectacularly uncompetitive and are currently crippling the poor farmers.

Many seem to be shouting war and trying to ignite one. All caused by one single person for greed and desire of greatness. 64 years old and gathered billions. Still it's not enough. How does he think he can return to Thailand and live? Become president of the north? It will not happen.

Posts like this really make me want to puke. So tell me..did Thaksin invent corruption and cronyism in Thailand ? I think not. You have such a simplistic and local view of the world...by your reconing, take Thaksin out of the equation and all will be nice and rosy in the LOS ? I am not a Thaksin lover, far from it. His emasculation of the judicial process, human rights record, abuse of power and process was in my opinion absolutely disgusting.... BUT... here is the point, you and others like you happily choose to ignore, where were the checks and balances that should have been in place in a functioning society to curb his excesses? Thailand and the Thais have no one to blame but themselves for this pathetic excuse of governance in a society which which gives respect to a Poo Yai ..irrespective as to how he gained his wealth, a society with no regard for the rule of law and thinks corruption is OK..so long as it does not go too far.

Thai democracy is in its infancy and, like all infants need care, encouragement and understanding to grow. Until the masses stand up and vote out of office the corrupt, then this sham will continue. Why have the Democrats not been able to win an election in yonks ?? Because they continually refuse to accept that they do not have the divine right to govern. What an arrogant bunch of hypocritical losers. If they were genuine, they would have changed their policies years ago to be inclusive of all Thais, not just the elite in Bangkok.

Brilliant post. Iget fed up with the infintiles, who think, get rid of Yingluk, and the country will be a mass of yellow roses, with the ref ones withered,no way this will happen. The reds are a majority, basec on an election, and democracy has to win.All your yellows,be very afraid, and come out the closet farangs, show your colours to the majority rule, hope u can run fast

One really has to be a blind fool to write such rubbish. So you are against democracy?! Go back to your home country, Thailand does not need your kinds of expats!

sorry my friend you are the blind fool

How can you vote for democracy when their is only 1 party to vote for

todays vote is for democracy or dictatorship

when there is only one party in power it is a dictatorship not democracy

Please state what your right is to tell someone to leave Thailand, that right is held only by a Thai citizen

Well, who you want to blame now that there is only ONE party to vote for? Thaksin? It's the so called "Democrat" Party that refused to go to the poll. If they at least would have said to cast a "No Vote" it at least would show the real situation and would show how many would be against the Government (or YL or Thaksin). But now peoples names are hijacked and YL gets it all.

You want change - Vote for it, fight it in Parliamant and Senate selflessly without ambitions for your own self. That would make you credible.

have you never played chess

the democrates refuse to put up candidates Check

PTP decide we don't care we will hold an election on our own

Democrates have the vocal people behind them check

PTP allws thai people to be killed as long as the get their majority of votes and win the fals e election

the Democrates us the law to show ist was all against the consitution CHECK MATE

PTP GONE

New Elections

you heard it hear on Thai Visa, so don't complain when it happens

this is Thailand

Bend with the wind or go home

"Bend with the wind or go home"

Tezza mate, didn't you post before that that no one other than a Thai citizen have the right to tell someone to leave the country? So are you now proclaiming to be a Thai citizen? Or is your Thai wife and her friends posting under your moniker?

Oh by the way, in chess, it is better to checkmate your opponent than the other way round.

What? Nothing further to add?

For a start my Thai wife has lived in Kalasin all her life

she went to university and god a BD then went to work in a top Bkk hotel where she learnt hospitality

After we where married she returned with me to Australia and got her Masters degree at Griffen Univerity and majored in Business management

we then returned to Udon where we bought a small farm, and she opened up a small business, from which she bough another block of land and built a retirement home for her parents

She has 6 Thai now working for her and the reason she can take time off to protest

If any thing happens to me she can carry on her own and look after our children,

So she has earned the right to talk about Issan people who have done something with their lives and those that are to lazt to do anything

her latest project is to open a boarding house close to the university she went to

and rent it out to Uni students

And she has done all this with no financial need from me, except for my opinions on moves she is going to make

Now how much ore you want me to add

I love Issan and I love the Issan people

PTP want to keep then under their thumb, and educated Issan is the end for the Taskin Mob, we are already starting to see that

Firstly what does your wife's own personal life have to do with the govt and the election? Nothing. She was driven and succeeded it has nothing to do with the government at all. Therefore your essay on her life brings nothing new to the table except for trying to brag.

You should instead try to elaborate on how ptp want to keep issan ppl under their thumb.

That's like cursing the obama administration when you see a poor ghetto person succeed or maybe a rich person failed in his life in which case both circumstances have nothing to do with the US govt and it's the same in your wife's situation.

This is what I like to hear, good on you and your lady. There are so many rural people that have no desire to improve. They have always done it this way-many of them say. Many are waiting for handouts- so many are lovely humble folk. What I mentioned was the (I used a harsh word ) disgusting lazy people who dump rubbish and teach their kids the same without bothering to improve the tin shack toilet that their teenage daughter has to use, this is disgusting.

Perhaps they should not have taken the loan if they could not afford to pay it back...duh

I don't post to often on these forms. I am an American and I live in homes from Krabi to Surin to Condo in Bangkok. I am amazed at the heartlessness of some of the stupid snide remarks that are mad about Thailand's crawl to Democracy. Every person in this country deserves the right to have a vote! Anyone that tries or suggest that be taken away. abolishes any good that they say they seek to do.

Congratulations on your numerous homes. However not really sure of the relevance

of that information to the thread...... Do some research on Thaksin, and his famous

statement that "democracy is not his goal".. Democracy is a sham here designed

to soothe western investors and the foreign press. When Thaksin " led" Thailand, he would

wake up in the morning with some wild idea, and by the afternoon it would be

implemented. Does that sound like democracy to you ???/
