For 2 or 3 nights now I have woken with a dry mouth and a terrible thirst.

Trying to figure out the cause of this and i suspect the boiled chicken I bought for Chinese New Year. You know the ones which come with head, feet, innards all laid out on a plastic tray.

I assumed that a boiled chicken is boiled in water but as the chicken meat was really tasty, so maybe there was something else added to the water, maybe msg?

Alcohol is one possible candidate, high blood glucose levels another, I'm sure there are other candidates but perhaps start to rule things out by getting your blood sugar checked.

It is also a common symptom for untreated diabetes. Get a blood test and see if your blood sugars are high.

MSG may have that effect on some people. Thirst is definitely a sign of a diabetic or pre-diabetic condition but this would have been there some time and not related to the chicken.

I had blood tests about 3 months ago so I do not think I have any health issues to cause this.

The reason I suspect the chicken is that often when I have packet noodles and some Thai sauces I have a slightly dry mouth feeling afterwards.

However the last few nights the dryness was far more intense. One night I had to drink 1 litre of water and stlil had a dry mouth.

I still suspect the chicken. Not sure whether to dump the rest or to eat it anyway.

i was hoping that somebody might confirm that they had a similar experience. (the boiled chicken came from Foodland btw)

A lot can happen in 3 months and blood sugars can go up and down. Also, unless the doc suspected diabetes, he may not have even ordered the bs test.

Your extreme thirst really sounds like high blood sugars. Are you also feeling quite tired?

It will take five seconds to do a finger prick test at any decent clinic.

Best to rule it out.

MSG would indeed be my guess, especially if you experience something similiar when eating other msg-laced foods.

if your BS was normal 3 months ago it would not now be at a level sufficient to cause this symptom.

I'm quite sure the "tasty" chicken was boiled in a Nam Blaa ( Fish souse ) / water mix ( fish souse first bec the bigger part, sometimes it's only the fish souse). Have a look at the meat again; is it white or more yellowish?

The high salt content in the fish souse could make you thirsty.

I am now pretty certain the chicken was the culprit. Two days no chicken and two days no dry mouth.

Not sure if it was cooked in fish sauce as the meat was very white, but probably cooked in super-saturated msg water or worse.

So much for trying to choose the health option.

The rest of the chicken has now been binned!
