Firecracker bomb injures six BMA employees

BANGKOK: -- A firecracker bomb exploded while employees of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) are sweeping and cleaning the Ratchadamnoen Avenue near the Pan Fah bridge, injuring six, two seriously.

Samranrat station police investigation inspector Napparuj Jitman said that the incident happened at about 11.25 a.m. today near the Pom Mahakarn Fortress which is near the Pan Fah bridge.

He said that a group of BMA employees was cleaning and sweeping the area when explosion was heard.

It was believed that the explosion was caused by a giant firecracker bomb which was hidden inside a roadside flower pot. It exploded after an employee accidentally tried to re-arrange the pot for cleaning and made the bomb to fall on the ground.

The explosion injured six BMA employees, two seriously.

Earlier the place was occupied by the People’s Army to Overthrow Thaksin Regime for months to protest the government. They have left the encampment to join other protest site for safety reason.

Six hurt in bombing; protesters march for donations to help farmers
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Feb 10 - A bomb exploded near a rally site in the capital, wounding at least six people today as anti-government protesters marching to collect donations to help farmers.

An explosive device exploded near Mahakan Fort on Ratchdamnoen Avenue. Six people were wounded, two of them listed in serious condition.

The violence took place as Suthep Thaugsuban, leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), led his supporters marching to Thonglor, Ekamai areas amid tight security before returning to the protest site at Asoke intersection.

Today's march was the second collections-focused march after Bt9.2 million was collected when the PDRC walked along Silom Road last week.

Mr Suthep said a large number of Thais want to donate in anonymous charity to help disgruntled farmers in several provinces who suffered from the overdue payments for the rice they have sold under the government’s subsidy scheme.

He said PDRC leader Sathit Wongnongtoey will supervise the use of the donated cash which will be used for legal fees when the farmers seek to file complaints against the caretaker government, and to fund farmer protests.

Meanwhile, the PDRC's alliance, the Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand (NSPRT), also rallied at the Royal Irrigation Department to pressure civil servants there to stop working. Fifty civil servants were reportedly working in the department building and they were asked to leave the compound as the protesters arrived. (MCOT online news)

Two workers of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration were seriously injured - plus four others injured - because of a firecracker bomb. They were not part of the PDRC. The PDRC had in fact abandoned the area. They were administrative workers, and they were cleaning up the area. They were the victims of a vicious, vicious unprovoked attack. What does this tell us ? It tells us that the attackers don't care if they were protesters or not. They don't care that they were administration workers peacefully and dutifully doing their job. They don't care if they had a wife and family who deeply loved them. It tells us that the attackers are monsters.

Ummm... I think it more likely a tragic accident where a BMA worker touched a ping pong bomb left there by the 'People's Army' (PEFOT*, I believe, was the acronym), rather than an 'attack' of any sort.

*Not the PDRC, although they're part of the same umbrella campaign obviously.

Ok, let's describe it as an abandoned IED, but my question is, what detonated it ? It would seem very unstable if it was set off by merely dropping it on the floor, or dislodging it. If this was the work of experts such as the Taliban, I would suggest it was a booby trapped IED ! But this has left me pondering.

One thing I always wonder, are this "giant firecrackers" what is usually called a pipe bomb in other places?

I mean, giant firecracker evokes memories of Tom & Jerry cartoons, but this things kill and maim.

this kind of giant fire crackers are in use in Chanagmai since over three decades and not always for peaceful means. Clandestine groups are using it on an almost daily base.
