Michael Sam makes American football history

Michael Sam is not gay activist.

He is kind of an "accidental" gay activist.

He is just being himself which of course in his situation has become very political.

He is from this new American generation where the closet just doesn't make sense any more.

He may still pay a big price for this though, as the older generation isn't quite there yet.

Anyway his (messy!) gay kiss on the news of being drafted to the RAMS is up there now as among the most historically important public gay kisses in American history.

Some people, conservative gays included, might QUESTION why Sam did the big messy public kiss. Would straight couples be expected to hold back upon such amazing good news? Why should a gay couple? There is your answer.

Also to add the fact that he is part of an INTERRACIAL gay couple is literally the icing on the cake!

All from this accidental gay activist.

Gotta love this man!

I've never been a fan of American football. I prefer something where you see a little more skin.....but not Sumo Wrestlers, that's a little bit too much skin.

Anyway, congratulations to him.

Isn't being drafted by the RAMS a little ironic?

Yeah, I don't watch American football anymore (go Niners!) but recognize how important the game is in American culture. Yes, we've got a culture!

This gets even juicier.

So it turns out Michael Sam's boyfriend is the grandson of a notorious MAFIA boss,

If the late mob boss William “Willie the Rat” Cammisano was like other Mafiosi—and by all accounts he most emphatically was—he would have been apoplectic had he been told his grandson was dating an African American.

But a Mafioso such as Willie the Rat would have taken that as the good news by comparison when he heard the rest.

For his grandson’s African-American lover also happens to be a man, as the whole world came to learn when Vito Cammisano kissed football draft pick Michael Sam in front of the ESPN cameras.

In doing so, Vito must have known that the press would quickly reveal him to be the grandson of a notorious Mafia boss whose nickname was once explained by a witness before a U.S. Senate Committee.

It seems people are going to be talking about "The Kiss" for a long, long time.

Michael Sam is now taking some serious heat about the kiss.

Now I think perhaps this kiss might be the most historically significant public gay kiss in American history up to this point.

Can anyone point to another such kiss (not in a movie) that could compete?

When people like O'Reilly and Sanchez ask Sam not to kiss his boyfriend, what they're really asking is that he not demonstrate even the most basic evidence of his sexuality. He can be gay, as long as he's never actually being gay.

Yes he does it for me...

First openly gay NFL draftee Michael Sam cut by Rams

Michael Sam, the first openly gay American Footballer drafted into the US National Football League, has failed to make the St Louis Rams' final roster.

The Rams filed their roster before Saturday afternoon's deadline and Sam was not among the 53-strong squad.

The 24-year-old defensive end can still be picked up by another team ahead of the season-opening matches next week.

Sam's move to declare his homosexuality in February was applauded by many, including President Barack Obama.

Bummer.

I'm pretty sure he is.

Sam is in an odd situation now.

He's very famous and also quite popular with mainstream Americans.

He still might be picked up by another team or invited to play a lesser role with the Rams ...

but suppose he isn't ... what an odd place to be. Famous and nowhere to play.

Of course the vast majority of those dreaming of being a pro football player never even come close and he has at least come close. But I don't know of a case where the player was so FAMOUS before even playing pro.

Also, quite frankly, his standing as an iconic gay "role model" has got to come down some notches ... as it's not only about coming out but also, harsh or not, dependent on his performance for what he does ... football.

I think he is overall a great "human" role model on how to deal with all the attention and even in failure he is showing great grace.

As far as the future of players coming out before (or even after) making pro teams, I'm not sure there will be any great change from this. It really would have been better for Sam to have become a star. Just being real.

More bad news for Sam.

No other team picked him up.

Now he will be competing to stay on the Ram's practice squad.

If not, he's totally "OUT" in the bad sense.

Nobody credible is suggesting that the Rams cutting him is homophobic as he was beat out by another player who is a better fit for the Rams situation and system.

HOWEVER, there is talk in the media the Sam not being picked by ANOTHER team is more suspect.

Oh well ...

OK, for Sam, it is getting worse, not better.

He was not picked for the Rams practice squad.

Turns out he wasn't a good fit for the Rams ... but would have been a good fit for six other teams.

He was the SEC player of the year ... normally star players like that are first round draft picks ... he barely made it to try for the Rams.

Still a chance to play on practice squad for another NFL team.

But probably not.

Maybe see him in CANADA.

Yes there are stirrings now his lack of an NFL career is due to homophobia. Not really from the Rams but from the league as a whole.

Weirdly, it's not clear that his story is going to help young gay players coming up.

A star gay college football player from a major college conference ... and now this.

It seems to me those closets are going to get DEEPER.

OK, another turn of events.

It appears the Dallas COWBOYS, Sam's favorite team located in the extremely homophobic state of Texas, will be signing Sam to their non-playing practice squad. Assuming this goes ahead, it is probably his best chance to progress to actually playing. That team needs defensive help badly.

Well, for Sam it doesn't get better. It gets worse.

The Cowboys have kicked Sam to the curb.

Football reasons only I suppose (hope so anyway).

Oh well!
