I dont know how your nephew kept calm withn such openly racist behaviour. From kids or low class people maybe but from a principal!!

Most racists are low class irrespective of their class.

Interesting ,that when it comes to representing Thailand in sports ,to qualify only one parent needs to be Thai.

Good Luck to Vanessa Mae or Vanakorn

Hence ,the legal precedent that you are Thai ,even if only one parent isThai

Sadly to say if there is any prejudice against halfies in Thailand its because ignorant people assumed the Thai mother was a bar girl or some lowly educated Isaan girl who caught a farang husband. These stereotypes began during the Vietnam war when many GI's hooked up with bar girls during their R&R and many halfies were born out of wedlock. Many of these halfies turned out to be some of the most attractive people and comprise the majority of Thai actors, actresses, singers and models then till today.

There is still much gossiping about these celebrities mums origins and how they met their dads.

In the past many educated thai women were reluctant to go out with farangs lest they be seen as bar girls/prostitutes and even though things have changed alot in the inter-racial dating scene it still exists.

I say ignore the ignorance and find a better school.

Bangkok is full of international schools that have open arms for halfies like Bangkok Patana, NIST, ISB, Harrows etc. Might be harder in Chiangmai and with thai schools but I'm sure there are less ignorant headmasters out there.

Not sure how how i would deal with this, BUT I, certainly wouldn't want my kids anywhere near the place. Either way you put it, it's racism. Tell the school to take a lesson in ( sex and travel) AKA tell them to F***off and find a better school.

Perhaps you have attitude problems or your kids have attitude problems or maybe even an inferiority or persecution complex, have you thought of that? Otherwise I would describe this as just another Thai bashing thread.

Yeah, blame the victim as we all know that in your eyes, Thais can do no wrong and are above criticism. It has to be bashing, doesn't it?

Your posts are notorious for whitewashing and excusing bad Thai behavior.

Just because the events in the quoted post haven't happened to you doesn't mean they don't happen to others. Or did to that poster's children.

And I'd recommend your keep quiet about the fact that your son is a Thai policeman as we all know what the Thai Police are like.

He's not excusing bad Thai behavior, nor am I. But unlike you, he's able to detect the truth from pure BS, which is what a lot of TV members post on these threads. It's absolutely necessary for guys like Beetlejuice to post his personal experiences, otherwise the poor newbie would have a completely distorted and inaccurate view of Thailand. Because honestly, most of the criticisms of Thailand that I read on TV are either pure BS or massive exaggerations, simply posted to bait the haters and racist scumbags. And as usual, the OP and this thread have achieved just that.

As I said; it must be very stressful and challenging for some living in Thailand. The persecuted and the oppressed.

I certainly would not want to live in a foreign country where I was a victim and believed everyone around me hated my guts, hated those in authority such as the police and other officials, had no faith in the Thai system here at all and had nothing but contempt for most things Thai. BTW, what do you think the Thai police are like? Do they specifically pick on you like others seem to pick on some posters on here.

I am not whitewashing or excusing bad Thai behaviour, because as strange as this may seem to you, my family and I actually love living here. Or do you believe my situation is unique?

I keep my head down, keep a low profile, made an effort to adapt into a Thai orientated society, not because I`m a Thai wanabie, but because I live here and want to enjoy and make the best of it.

All I can say is; for those who for them, Thailand has not met their expectations, than why stay here? Rather than keep moaning and griping about how you are all victimised here, because no one has sympathies for the losers and the long and suffering. And this is not a why don`t you go home message.

That's all good until u realise that the education is absolutely c**p.

You seem to be going off the theme of this thread, which is about alleged prejudices and victimisation shown towards half farang kids at Thai schools, and not about the standard of the Thai education system, or as other posters have mentioned the police or anything else they enjoy to gripe about Thailand.

Thai visa should start another forum category titled; rants and raves, about everything negative in Thailand, for those who proclaim to be victims of constant prejudice and injustices in Thailand.

Sad.

A Thai friend rang and made an appointment for my teenage daughter to enroll in a Christian school in Chonburi. When we arrived after traveling from south Thailand it was clear she was European. There was confusion all round the general office and suddenly there were no more vacancies that term. Suspecting this to be a racist inspired refusal I said ok what about next term then? Confusion within the ranks. A phone call is made and within seconds a not so Christian Brother appears and puts forward the excuse they feel my daughter would struggle with oral and written Thai. When I countered saying that she was not just fluent in Thai but Chinese and English too the not so Christian Brother said he was busy and attempted to walk away. I of course had my say when it was clear she would not be enrolled but the bottom line is the racism that starts in the family home spreads to the schools and it is palpable all over Thailand.

Has a nasty aftertaste to the days of the NSDAP, the English would read National Socialist German Workers' Party. They defined a far right course and everything non arian was ..... non arian.

I've been coming across that for the last 30 years, my three grown 50%-Thai-only-children can tell you more about it.

Thais have always been very nationalistic and if it is not the top like school board then it is the teacher giving the kids a hard time. In English my neighbours kids were far superior in primary school than the teacher ever would be and the teacher did not miss an opportunity to show, who is the real "Khun Khroo" until I went to - Thaistyle - personally threaten him. My neighbour did not dare to do it for fear of eventual consequences - which it did not have.

I tend to agree with that but the way BJ posted that experience sought to imply that just because he hadn't experienced it, it was beyond the realms of possibility that anyone else had.

The Head Teacher is quite right to be concerned, the issue is disruption to the learning speed of the class. Why not tell him/her that you've given your child explicit instruction to learn at half his/her normal speed thus allowing the rest of the class to keep up.

What you are saying is discrimination in the opposite direction!! I have two adult daughters who are Lu Krings, their mother is Thai, both born in Europe, but both commanding the Thai language. They both attended Thai as well as international schools, Thai universities, with post graduate studies in Europe and have never felt any discrimination either here in Thailand or in Europe. Our younger daughter has experienced this when she applied for a job as an English teacher in an reputed international school in Bangkok. She did not get the job and was told off the record that although her qualifications were superb, most Farang parents wish to have an English, English (Farang) teacher. She eventually got a job with another good international school in Bangkok and is now overseas.

Say no more, as that statement just about explains everything. I am sure you`re go far with that attitude in Thailand and especially if you have passed on the same attitudes to your kids.

I hear you. But don't you get tired of hearing the constant cries of "racism" at every slight. What the Beetle dude is saying is that perhaps it's something else, maybe some farangs bring it on themselves, which I find more plausible.

When I first came to Thailand, I would occasionally go off on a Thai over something silly, usually involving a customer service sort of thing. Well it wasn't real effective and only served to make me look the fool. But instead of blaming it on racism, I looked inside myself to see that it was me more than my skin color. Nowadays, I feel like the Thais treat me more than fair pretty much all of the time, no complaints. I think that's what Beetlejuice is saying.

Total crap.

Many Christian schools in Thailand are run on strict orthodox Christian principles, they expect their pupils to abide by these principles, some unkind people may describe these as bible bashers.

If for any reasons the school believes a prospective pupil would not fit into this category, then the school would recommend that, that particular school with those particular curriculum's may not be suitable for certain students for those reasons. The same applies whether it be a Jewish school, Buddhist or whatever.

Also any foreign child that wishes to enrol in a Thai school would be welcome providing the child could prove his/her proficiency in their Thai language skills and no way would these children be instantly rejected without first being offered to take a test and without an evaluation to see culture wise whether or not the child could fit in and would be happy and content at an all Thai school.

This is about compatibility and what`s best for the child`s interests, not about racism or prejudice.

Agree. I too find these stories really hard to believe. As always, there's something missing in these stories, if it's even remotely accurate to begin with. And like you, it has not been my experience.

Oh absolutely. It's tiring hearing some jokers complain because the red carpet isn't rolled out every time they speak like the good old days of favorable exchange rates

I've echoed his sentiments on several occasions insofar as saying that if I was subjected to "racism" at every moment by every Thai as some claim is the case when they're referred to as farang, I'd have been on a plane out long ago.

My issue with BJ is that if his existence - 30+ years of Western-Thai marriage, solid finances, grown up kids in good jobs etc - is so charmed, should he be as vigorously dismissive of the concerns of others just because he hasn't encountered them? Shouldn't he, in fact, be only too willing to offer some useful advice to people with only their children's well-being at heart rather than telling them to book flights and eff off?

He sounds far, far angrier than someone with his ostensibly blissful life should be

Anyway, as you know, I ain't white so I can feel pretty justified in saying that what whites get here is the equivalent of a love tap compared to real racism that would have 99% of them scurrying home to hide behind their mothers' skirts.

IMO, Thais aren't racist but I spent quite some time pondering whether or not I had become desensitized to it. I thought maybe they have been nasty to me but it wasn't acute enough to register on my bigot-o-meter but, after much rumination, I came to the conclusion that that was <deleted>. I didn't detect it cos it wasn't there.

I just think some white people, having been in the majority in their homelands and never really had to deal with racism, are a lot more sensitive to it.

I think they used to call that "a chip on the shoulder" back in the day

Yes, there are many things that irritate me in Thailand also, especially the political situation at the moment, even the Thais have a saying; This Is Thailand, meaning, it`s far from perfect, but most of these tales are highly exaggerated or simply made up, probably because these posters are seeking some sympathy for what seems to be their discontentment of living in Thailand, perhaps for reasons that they are unable to hack it here and struggling with their lives.

My advice for any newbies considering living long term in Thailand is to completely ignore the majority of these negative posts as these people obviously have a chip of their shoulders.

An alternative approach might be to go and experience these things first hand and to form your own judgement rather than to listen to the complainers & detractors and/or the complainers & promoters. BTW there's no chips on BJ's shoulders, no siree, not a one! whistling.gif

This is an idiotic response - there is no 'concern', as mixing has been occurring for over half a millenia.

Ask the Principle's Blood Group - if not 'O+', then he has foreign ancestors.

You could understand kids, but it's really sad to hear it coming from the top. I've got a friend who's half western kid was recently banned from entering English competitions at school. No problems with the half Chinese kids entering the Mandarin competitions, or even competing against 100% Thais in the Thai competition, until she won of course.

Thai culture - i.e. HYSO culture tends to be racist - anti anything not Thai. Never realizing that Thailand is a small pimple on a bull's ass.

Am I the only one who can understand why they don't want luk kruengs to participate in English language competitions or why the other students might find it to be an unfair advantage? Why even hold the competition, just give the luk krueng the trophy since no one else has even a remote chance of winning.

Firstly I have encountered crap in Thailand and in other places around the world, the same as we all do, it`s a part of life, the good, the bad and the ugly.

It`s not so much that my lifestyle is charmed, but rather I have learned to appreciate what I have, the main thing being that my family and I are in good health and not living or suffering in poverty, we`re not rich but get by and I`m content with that. As the wise man says; thank heavens for small mercies, I savour every moment of my life in Thailand day by day and I also consider myself lucky to be living in Thailand, if not I would have sodded off long ago if I lived somewhere where I was unhappy and hated it, rather than posting on here crying like a baby saying; oh dear, everyone`s against me, I am a continual victim locked in a situation I can`t escape from.

You asked for my advice and as a stinking farang who has lived here since the stone age, here it is; if you are not a whitey than all I can say is you`re stuck with it, the same as we are all blessed or lumbered with what we are, blessed or lumbered depends how one perceives themselves`s. I couldn`t give a rat`s behind who your ancestors are nor am I interested, a person is a person and that`s it.

For those who intend to live in Thailand for the long term should give the positives priority and shove the negatives in the background, because for those who plan properly and don`t just plonk themselves here on a hope and a pray that everything will work out, than Thailand is a wonderful country to live and especially great for our children, comparing the environments here to that of a shitty UK council estate or a US trailer park. Best move I ever made was getting my kids out here. All my kids have 3 nationalities, US, British and Thai and not one of them has any incentives or interests to go and live abroad.

I`ve made my bed and quite happy to lay in it without moaning and complaining on here about my lot and all the nasty, mean Thai people around me.

I am not vigorously dismissive of the concerns of others, I just have a low tolerance level for the losers and the long and suffering, otherwise I have deep concerns for those who have genuine problems or down on their luck, such as health issues for example or if a tragedy touches them in their lives, like the little 9 year old girl who died from leukemia down my way last week.

Sorry, but I have no other way I can explain this.

Yeah, in the past there were even red light districts all over Thailand designed specifically for farang tourists and the tourists would often drag their paid company all over the country, down the street, in hospitals and even into shopping malls inappropriately dressed. Crazily enough, there was even a city Pattaya that was basically a giant brothel for farang tourists. Because of all of this, Thais somehow formed negative opinions about farang-thai relationships.
