the greek, transliterated, is 'anthropos' which I take to mean an individual man, however, it would be even more interesting if it referred to 'mankind'. That would make the whole of mankind the beast!

People thought the world was going to come to an end many times in the last 6+ years, and indeed, many more times than that since we stopped swinging from limb to limb and started walking on 2 legs.

Consider too that all of our "dates" are arbitrary constructs, the product of man's intellect, reason and judgement (which we all know to be flawed as often as not).

What will be 6 June this year, is not what would have been 6 June 1,000, 2,000 or 20,000 years ago.

For example:

The switch from Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in the English speaking world took place on Julian date Wednesday, September 3, 1752 when 11 days were removed making the new date Thursday, September 14, 1752. The Julian calendar was created July 1, 45 B.C.

Then of course, you have to consider that in this part of the world, this year is 2549, not 2006 !

And in the Islamic world, 6 June 2006 would translate into "Tuesday 9 Jumaada al-awal 1427 A.H."

Using the Jewish calendar, 6 June 2006 is actually "Sivan 10, 5766"

The world didn't end on 31 Dec 999. It didn't end on 31 Dec 1999. It won't end on 6 June 2006.
