Tsunami warning system to be installed on Koh Samui

SURAT THANI: -- A tsunami warning system will be installed on Samui Island, Thailand's famous resort island in this southern Surat Thani Province.

Surat Thani Governor Thawatchai Therdphaothati said on Sunday the tsunami warning system would be located on Koh Samui's Chaweng Beach, representing the country's sole disaster warning system in the Gulf of Thailand so far.

"The installation of the tsunami warning system on Chaweng Beach is expected to be complete next month," he told journalists.

"The newly-installed early warning system will be directly linked with the National Disaster Warning Centre in Bangkok's suburban Nonthaburi Province," he added.

Rehearsal plans on evacuation of local residents and tourists in case of a tsunami will be set after the installation of the new disaster warning system on the island, according to the provincial governor.

That's a nice plan but a few questions comes to mind:

1. How much time between the warning and Tsunami itself?

2. Where the heck would all the people go (in hurry and panic :D )in case of a tsunami; the beach stretches some 6/7 Km's and there are no hills to run to (for the greatest part)... :D Apart from that, total 'chaos' would be complete as there is NO infrastructure whatsoever and the single beach road would be completely blocked.

3. What about Lamai....and other beaches on the East Side?

Hmmmmm :o

LaoPo

how about spending this wasted $ on mending a few of the roads, building taxi stands through town to relieve congestion, and generally upgrade the crumbling infrastructure that is never addressed.

Elections are coming up lol.Feel good campaign.

No chance of a tsunami hitting this side of Thailand - too many land bits between here and the nearest marine seismic zone near The Philippines.

A typhoon cutting a path through this area and raising the sea level by two or three meters - that would be a more likely looming disaster.

Yes, well, lets not let that get in the way of some good old electioneering Jose! :o

Its better to be safe then sorry I guess, there really wouldnt be anywhere to run but if it did happend saving 10 more lives would be worth it.

Although the plate is very far away, but if it was a massive tsunami atleast they would get some sort of warning instead of just getting smashed by the waves without even trying to escape.

The problem is, Samui & KP are surrounded by water, so what happens to the other areas?Putting it just in Chaweng is just plain stupid. What about the other residents? Is it just a stunt to further increase occupancy in that particular area by making you feel safe?

Read the adverts next CHAWENG THE ONLY BEACH ON SAMUI ( OR THE GULF ) WITH IT'S OWN TSUNAMI WARNING SYSTEM. Makes you wonder. :o
