I need to use my flash (580EX ii) off camera to reduce ugly steel-eyes on my subjects. I have successfully used the built-in pop up flash to control a remotely placed 580EX but I am limited to line-of-sight placement. So I got myself a cheap pair of radio triggers (Pixel Soldier) which claimed high speed sync capabilities and they work really well-even behind a wall.

The problem now is I can't get ETTL nor High speed sync modes once I have the radio transmitter and receiver mated with camera and flash. The flash 'defaults' to TTL and HSS is unavailable but 2nd Curtain is OK (no use to me). Pressing mode button on the 580ex merely cycles through TTL/M/Multi.

Digging through the 580exii manual (page 55), it appears my 7D camera has been turned into a type-B camera when I use this radio trigger. I've lost ETTL and HSS amongst others.

I have probably missed something in the setup but can't for the life of me figure out what.

Alternatively, what is a reliable radio trigger that will work for my combo? I know about the Pocket Wizard but sadly it is beyond my budget.

Any advice/tips much appreciated. Thanks.

^^^ @ jack2964....

I cannot really help you as I'm not familiar with Pixel Soldier triggers and yes

the Pocket Wizards are expensive. However when I need to remote trigger

more than 2 lights (rare) I use Phottix Strato II's. They cost about 100USD

a set. My camera's are Nikon & Phottix make triggers for your camera.

Just Google the name and have a look. Hope this helps in some way...

Thanks Sunshine51.

Looks like I've just wasted 1800Baht. The transmitter merely triggers the off camera flash but won't allow on camera setting changes nor manual selection of ETTL or HSS.

Ah well lesson learned...got what I paid for even though the accompanying manual says it supports ETTL and HSS.

Did a search and your recommendation of the Phottix Strato II is being considered as well as the Yongnuo 622C.

Any shots with your new scope yet?

Apparently one can't go wrong with the Pocket Wizards but the $$$$$ outlay

can be such a bitch especially if one doesn't use it every day. A PM is in your

"box" regarding the scope but all is well regarding said device...for the moment!

Cheers!
