Corruption is key reason for collapse of rice pledging scheme, says poll

BANGKOK: -- Rampant corruption is the key reason for the collapse of the government’s rice pledging scheme, according to a latest survey conducted by Bangkok Poll.

Bangkok University or Bangkok Poll asked 60 economists at 30 leading organizations between Feb 18 and 26 on populist policies of political parties about their success or failures.

On the rice pledging scheme, 51% of respondents said corruption, non-transparent processes and lack of effective monitoring systems was key factors that derailed the scheme, it said.

It went on saying 29.4% pointed to mismanagement of the scheme, the inability to release rice in stockpiles, a lack of expertise among staff working on the scheme and poor understanding of domestic and overseas rice markets.

29.4% said the scheme failed because the price of pledged paddy is higher than market price, thus prompting no farmer to withdraw them out.

Well duh!

And since the government is in charge of this scam, I wonder which cronies of the Dubai boss got rich out of it.

The collapse has been a mixture of all the factors mentioned in the poll.

However, the corruption is the factor that will bring all the corrupt down.

Including many MPs and Yingluck.

I don't know if it is corruption or sheer stupidity on behalf of the Government.

They stack on a promise to the farmers, with a good intention to improve their lives and at the same time get their votes.

Things went drastically wrong, but they never had the brain, the decency or the will to change.

The outcome is that the farmers turned against them as most of the Thai people have done.

It is still time to think of the people and stop following orders from a megalomaniac and egomaniac, criminal fugitive.

Wow and they just realized that.. I was seen to fail before it every started… Sadly… And more so sadly for the Hard working Farmers...

Well duh!

Most (all) of them I would imagine.

I do better with multiple choice questions biggrin.png

I seem to recall when the rice pledging scheme was put on the table a long time ago, many economists warned that this was doomed to failure, and would open the doors to corruption as well have an effect on the economy, but nobody in the government listened.

I also remember many years ago when somebody warned the people not to build on the natural waterways, as this would block the natural gateways when the floods came, but nobody in the government listened.

Well glad to see that basic economics is alive and well in Thailand.

I pay 100 USD for something worth 50 USD and try in the market to sell it for 100 USD and no one buys......

And then I go off and have to buy one more for 100 USD and continue to try to sell it and no one buys

And then I go off and have to buy one more for 100 USD and continue to try to sell it and no one buys

And then I look at my bank and there is no more money.....

No one needed to be corrupt for this thing to fail. So basically, they are saying that the system itself wasnt' a badly thought out strategy, but rather, if no one had been corrupt, it would have worked.

Who thinks up these ridiculous surveys. Asking Somchai on the street this type of question is stupid beyond. They may as well have asked a bunch of men whether they find breasts or feet the more attractive part of a lady's anatomy.

Come on Red supporters. Tell us Yingluck has nothing to do with it because you keep on criticizing the NACC.

This poll comes to over 100%???

109.8%….

The saddest thing is that the majoity of people believe it was crimminal behaviour that scuppered it, rather than just being stupid and arrogant.

What do you think caused the collapse?

A. Illegal corruption

B. Ignorance

C. Arrogance#

D. Stupidity

E. Confluence in the stars between Moon and Venus

F. Bad luck (Chok mai dee)

Obviously, Thaksin isn't B,C, or D, so it must be A, E and F. I bet in my survey E and F would beat B,C and D combined . What a country. The natural answer is that they nicked a boat load of money. Naturally....

"What the hell is "the inability to release stockpiles?"

Is that code for IT IS TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE........

The picture accompanying this article is revealing in and of itself. It reminds one of the last panning shot of Citizen Kane, when all the elements of his past are laid bare. This picture says more about the Yingluck administration than any other.

Please wake me up if somebody will go to jail...

Yeah, and news just came out, that around 60 to 80 billion Baht were syphoned off via Hong Kong, If they hadn't been so greedy, they would propably ahve won teh February election much smoother.

Now the Red Shirts and gov't have to explain, that their voters can not receive the money that is due for them, because around half of it is already gone to HK or SG or DBX. "We steal not only the food from your plate, we even steal your plates too, but please do not worry and vote for us..."

Corruption is the cause of everything that keeps Thailand lacking in so many areas. Thailand would/could blossom to such heights if ONLY ...... but hell "I'm preaching to the choir." My bad.

Links please....And please dont explain that this is something from Suthep on stage.

Bait taken hook line and sinker. Instead of a multiple choice questionnaire, let's see THE facts laid out in the courts and government instead of us free loading attorneys pointing the fingers. My father taught me a valuable lesson in life, when you point the finger at some one else for their mistakes and misgivings, there will always be 3 fingers pointing back at oneself.... Its food for thought we could all take in. Humans are corrupt, greedy, and dishonest by nature. If you say that you are not then you are a perfect man or women indeed, and I wish it weren't so for all of us, alas it is.

I guess non of the gvot listened because they thought they would get a piece of the action and lets face it thats what Thai politics is all about, do you see any poor ones here? Its not just Thailand though, all countries have these bods so lets be honest about it, what we really desperately need is some honest politicians and in Thailand well right here right now stand up and be counted because the only honest ones I am seeing is Abhisit and Prayuth ( I know he leader of the Army) he says the right things and seems trustworthy.

I doubt that a poll of 60 economists would be classed as 'expensive'.

That and the quality of rice is not good. Part of why corruption has been destroying the scheme. If the govt. actually purchase the rice it was old rice from neighboring countries, just to fill the warehouse. Whenever the were able to sell the rice, it was from the new crop. That is why they can not even give the rice back to the farmers. All their rice have been sold. That is why they have been accused of defrauding the govt.

And if YS thinks she is not at all responsible for the failure and execution of scheme, she is gravely wrong. It is like the captain of a plane that would blame his navigator, co-pilot, engineer, stewardress when the plane crashes. The captain was sleep at the helm as YS has been. She knows she is wrong. The highest position of the land has many responsibility. One of it s steering the country policy in the right direction. Of course how can she steer when she doesn't even know how to drive.
