Bangkok survives salinity stress

BANGKOK, March 4 – Bangkokians has overcome the impact of saltwater intrusion during the March 3-4 high tides, thanks to large runoff volume discharged from the North.

Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) governor Thanasak Wattanatana on Tuesday assured the public that water collected from Chao Phraya River for tap water production at MWA Sam Lae pumping station in Pathum Thani’s provincial seat, the capital’s main water station, is safe.

The MWA earlier urged the public to reserve freshwater for household use as a result of salt-laden seawater intrusion during the high tides. However, water in the Chao Phraya River, 96 km from the Gulf of Thailand, records saline content of below 0.25g per litre, resulted in less than 250mg of chloride per litre. It is now safe for consumption, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, thanks to the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) for discharging water from Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province in an attempt to control level of saline content in freshwater.

Mr Thanasak pledged that MWA will closely monitor the situation. but Bangkok residents have been urged nonetheless to use water wisely and not to panic as the salt intrusion lasts only for a short period of time. The MWA still produces enough tap water for public consumption. Mr Thanasak said that if the water in an individual home does not taste salty, then there is no need for water storage. BANGKOK, 4 March 2014 (NNT) - Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is scheduled to visit northeastern provinces from March 5-8 in a bid to receive first hand accounts of the developing drought crisis.

Ms Yingluck’s tour of the Northeast will take her to Khon Kaen, Sakon Nakorn and Mukdahan. After the visit, she plans to return to Bangkok to attend the funeral of Somdej Buddhacharn Toh Phromarangsee.

Many provinces have already been declared drought disaster zones. In Chiang Mai, two more districts badly hit by the drought are set to be declared disaster zones. Nearly 10,000 households have been affected by water shortages. Most of the province’s lower areas are experiencing drought as they are located in the downstream reaches of the rivers.

Senate can meet in April without the House, says speaker

BANGKOK: -- Newly elected senators can be sworn in when the Senate convenes a special session in April, even if the required 95 per cent of House members have not been elected due to protests and electoral disruptions, Senate Speaker Nikom Wairatpanich said Tuesday.

He said the law allowed the Senate to call a special session even though the House was dissolved, in order to appoint members of independent organisations.

The Senate would decide on endorsing a new National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) member to replace Jaided Pornchaiya, whose term is due to end when he reaches the retirement age of 70 on March 12.

Thailand sees trade surplus of THB170 billion with ASEAN

BANGKOK, 4 February 2014 (NNT) - Thailand’s trade surplus with ASEAN rose to 170 billion baht in 2013 with sugar and Para rubber as important agricultural exports.

Secretary-General of the Office of Agricultural Economics Anant Lila said import and export data from the Thai Customs Department suggested that Thailand exported agricultural produce worth 242 billion baht and imported 69.5 billion baht last year. Thailand’s major exports included sugar, Para rubber, rice and instant coffee while important imports included fish, frozen seafood, food premixes and palm kernel oil.

The country’s trade surplus with ASEAN was 172.6 billion baht last year.

The office also found that the current expansion of the ASEAN market offers good opportunities for quality Thai agricultural products to thrive in the region. However, Thailand still needed to develop its competitiveness by using knowledge and technology in the production of agricultural exports while reducing the costs of production, the secretary-general said.

As for imports, Mr Anat also stressed that it was necessary for Thailand to select imports in line with quality and safety standards so that they were processed into high quality products.
