So i take my pictures with a high mp usually around 17 or 20mp and that causes the picture to be very huge like around 5474 x 3080 or along those sizes which is much larger than all single screens out there especially those at 1920 x 1080 the standard HD res.

When i check the pictures that i have taken under properties they show the res size and the dpi which is 350. When i upload the pictures to imgur my hosting site and i save the uploaded picture i find out that the dpi is lowered to 72. The quality and the size of the image seems to be the same.

Recently due to the slow loading of huge images and also due to the fact that some websites including this forum does not auto resize my original images i use a software editor known as gimp2 to resize the pictures. The problem is when i post these resized images on forums well the quality seems poor. The resized images that are not uploaded look ok to me but i am not sure if the hosting site imgur lowers the quality.

I have 2 images one which is the original at a very large res and one which is resized with gimp2 and i would love to post them here for you guys to compare. The problem is this forum doesn't auto resize large images so i don't know how to post the original images here.

Anyway here is the resized image. If you guys would love the original image to compare to see if quality has dropped just say so. Here are 6 resized images for more comparisons.

Ok i looked at my resized images again they look better than the images that i have uploaded. The images here look larger so i guess this forum stretched them out a bit.

Do you guys have the same problems when your pictures don't look as good after you uploaded them.

Yes, mine look terrible on here once linked to Flickr.

Sometimes I'll add the link as well.

These days I don't get too wrapped up in resizing for the web, image quality depends on the screen you're viewing the photo with.

I put my photos onto Google Plus, that does the resizing for me and I can apply web enhancements if I choose.

I screen print the photo's that I put on the forums with Snagit, Frame up the image, take the screen shot, put the border around it, and upload at a fraction of the size.

If you shoot then process in RAW you get zero degradation. However once you convert

to jpeg and do any resizing then the quality is lowered to a certain degree. By how much

depends upon the resizing and the host server you are posting the image to. Bearing in mind

that the odd pixel amy get lost in transmission. If you work in jpeg every time you open the

image, do some work on it then save it, the image is degraded also. If what you are pleased

with in RAW is essential you should post in RAW and bear the time it takes to upload with

a pinch of salt...and honey.

Well....ya just gotta stick with what ya got! Jpeg's are good

for most web based photography. Just remember to make a

hi-res copy and store that somewhere safe so you still have

a workable original. You'll be fine.
