I've got osteoporosis, have had 5 broken bones in 4 years, and I'd like a doctor here who knows what he's doing.

I've found most orthopedists in Bangkok only know much about the money making part of their profession (surgery) and not much about prevention.

Established osteoporosis is difficult to treat and cannot be "cured"

There is a group of drugs known as bisphosphonates which are often prescribed to severely osteoporitic people in an attempt to reduce the incidence of fractures. But these medications are not without side effects and some find they are not able tolerate this medication.

Osteoporitic fractures are almost always caused by falls so there is also an absolute need to check on ones general health to identify and if possible correct any issues which may be precipitating falls.

Thanks. I know all the above, but needed more: there's diets, exercises, and drugs to consider. The Bumrungrad folks know squat (at least the 4 orthopedists I've known there over 5 years).

PS: I'm male, so I don't often see the gynecologist, except when she's off duty and *I'm* doing the examination.

Being male makes it harder, will get back to you. Most fo the specialists in this area in Thailand are Gyns or endocrinologists, not orthopods..

OK.

What you want is Dr. Narong Bunyaratavej

He is at Siriraj, should be able to consult him privately through their private wing http://www.siphhospital.com/en/index.html

Call center 1474. The weboste unfortunately does not list hours.

He is an orthopedist but with a specific specialization/interest in osteoporsis, has published on it in scientific journals and is an active member of the Thai Osteoporosis Foundation.

This orthopedic doc at Samitivej:

Although he is primarily sports medicine, he has done research on osteoporosis and appears to be an active member of the Thai Osteoporosis Foundation.

You do not mention anything about the cause of your osteoporosis. Have you had a good endocrine work-up?

This doctor is my general physician and also wife who was treated for osteoporosis by medicines/tests for several years until returned to normal and drugs could be eliminated. He is an endocrinology doctor and can not speak to how good he is or is not but does not push anything onto anyone and does not seem to be full of himself and will refer for anything he feels needs it. Wife is not an easy patient and she likes him very much. He will listen. As you asked about prevention offer this doctor as a possible option as that was what wife needed.
