Crime Police Dismantle ‘Mule Account’ Network Attempting Cross-Border Escape

Police in Chiang Saen district have arrested four individuals suspected of operating as part of a “mule account” syndicate, following a targeted investigation into cross-border financial crimes in northern Thailand. The arrests were made just as the group was preparing to board a ferry to cross into Laos. The operation, carried out at around 13:05 on 29 July, was led by Pol. Col. Anuphan Kantharat, Superintendent of Chiang Saen Police Station, and supported by local administrative officials, including Chiang Saen District Chief Mr. Katasit Nueangla and senior investigators. The four suspects were named as Mr. Watthana (48), Mr. Natthaphong (30), Mr. Phitsanu (38) and Ms. Anicha (39), all residents of Chiang Rai province. Officers had been monitoring their behaviour for some time and moved in to arrest the group near the Chiang Saen District Office’s border pass centre in Wiang Subdistrict, where the suspects were found waiting in an orange Isuzu pickup truck without rear license plates. Police discovered digital conversations on Line and Facebook Messenger confirming the group’s involvement in the recruitment and sale of “mule accounts”, personal bank accounts sold or rented for use in cybercrime and fraudulent financial transactions. According to investigators, Mr. Watthana was the key coordinator responsible for finding individuals willing to sell or open bank accounts to be used by criminals. The other three suspects admitted to selling their own accounts due to unemployment and financial difficulties. All four have been taken into custody, and Mr. Watthana faces formal charges for “facilitating, advertising, or promoting the buying, selling, renting or lending of bank accounts, electronic cards or e-wallet accounts for use in the commission of cybercrime or other criminal offences.” Authorities are continuing efforts to trace further links in the network, which is suspected to have ties across the border in Laos. Police have reiterated warnings to the public not to engage in the sale or transfer of personal bank accounts, as these are frequently exploited by scam operations and money-laundering syndicates. The choice not to run for governor follows months of internal deliberation. Sources describe it as a difficult process for Harris, who seeks to maximise her impact. Her immediate plans include exploring nonprofit work and potentially establishing a political action committee (PAC). She is also gearing up to campaign for Democratic candidates in upcoming midterms. Harris has a storied history in California, having served as the state attorney general and then as a U.S. senator. Her career took a national turn when she assumed the vice presidency after Biden’s 2020 election victory. In 2024, Harris stepped into the role of Democratic presidential nominee after Biden exited the race. Her announcement opens up the governorship race, as term limits prevent current Governor Gavin Newsom from seeking re-election. Crime Drug Dealer Caught at Party in Ayutthaya – Attempts to Bribe Officials with 200,000 Baht

According to Mr. Niwat Rungsakorn, Governor of Ayutthaya, the arrest took place as part of a government-led crackdown under the “No Drugs No Dealers” campaign. Acting on reports from concerned residents near Bang Rakam Subdistrict in Nakhon Luang District, authorities launched a surveillance and sting operation. Officers posing as buyers arranged to purchase 1,000 methamphetamine tablets from a suspect later identified as Mr. Phichit aged 54. During the planned meeting, Mr. Phichit was observed drinking alcohol with others when he placed a packet of methamphetamine on the table. Officers immediately moved in and arrested him. A search of the suspect revealed an additional gram of crystal methamphetamine hidden on his person. During the arrest, Mr. Phichit attempted to bribe the officers with 200,000 baht in cash. However, officials refused the bribe and proceeded with formal charges. Another suspect, Mr. Phaiwan, aged 35, was arrested during a follow-up sweep of the same area. He was found in possession of 55 methamphetamine pills in an alley near Wat Wang in Bang Rakam. Mr. Phichit has been charged with possession of a Category 1 narcotic (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute, as well as attempting to bribe public officials. Mr. Phaiwan faces charges of unauthorised possession and use of methamphetamine. Mr. Anon Chaichat, Assistant District Officer for Ayutthaya, personally addressed Mr. Phichit following the arrest, warning him that bribery is a criminal offence and that the authorities involved in the operation strictly uphold the law. He added that while Mr. Phichit must face punishment, his cooperation could result in a reduced sentence if it leads to the arrest of further offenders.
