(BBC) A shooting incident has taken place at the Texas Army base that was the site of a gun rampage in 2009 that left 13 soldiers dead and 32 wounded.

A senior US official told news agencies that one person was dead and at least 14 injured in the latest incident.

The shooting is said to have occurred at the Carl R Darnall Army Medical Center, located on the base.

President Barack Obama said he was "heartbroken" over the news and vowed to investigate fully.

A "shelter in place" order was issued when the news of the "active shooter" broke.

At least 1 killed and 14 injured in Fort Hood shooting

TEXAS, 3 April 2014 (NNT) – At least one person has been killed and 14 others wounded in a shooting at a U.S. Army base in Fort Hood, Texas.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity and noted the information was preliminary, said he could not confirm reports the shooter had been killed.

The base said in a statement that its directorate of emergency services "has an initial report that a shooter is dead," but also added that the information was unconfirmed.

Local news reports said there may be two suspected shooters.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama said he was "heartbroken" that another shooting had occurred at the Fort Hood Army base and described the situation there as fluid.

Fort Hood was put on lockdown and police were securing its perimeter. Helicopters could be seen circling the base in live TV footage broadcast from the scene. Police went from building to building, while scores of police vehicles and ambulances were on the scene.

Authorities advised those on the post to stay away from windows and to keep doors closed and locked.

(CNN) -- Authorities have identified the man who opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas on Wednesday, killing three people before committing suicide, as Specialist Ivan Lopez.

Sixteen more people were injured Wednesday when he opened fire at Fort Hood, the sprawling Army post in Texas still on edge after a mass shooting there left 13 dead in 2009, officials said.

The gunman also died. He was engaged by military police before he fatally shot himself in the head, said the Army post's commander, Lt. Gen. Mark A. Milley.

The suspect, a soldier who had served in Iraq, "had behavioral health and mental health" issues, Milley told reporters late Wednesday.

The general said there was no known motive for the shooting.

He did not have access to military weapons and it is against regs to carry weapons on base. He purchased the gun legally through a local gun store and carried out this pre-meditated action. There is evidence that the medications he was taking led to his behavior.

Any military personnel who bring a weapon onto a military base without registering it has violated a lawful general order. You'd have to have a specific reason & justification for doing so. It's definitely not routine. (Civilians can't lawfully do it either, but I don't know exactly what they're guilty of and it's academic in this case anyway.)

The interesting thing is - this gunman ended up shooting himself, and did so when confronted by security with a weapon of her own. In other words, the killing stopped and the incident ended the moment another gun appeared. Security never even had to fire a shot. Hmmm.
