Thai-born British citizen accused of lese majeste by her own parents

Hmmm I happen to have a copy of 1984 and I do like a good sandwich..... a deadly combination if there ever was one.

This reminds of story about children Jefferson had by his slave Sally. Guess he sent them off to Europe to be educated etc. On Jeffersons death executors of his estate wrote the children and said they should return to US and resume being slaves. For some reason they declined the offer....

However, Rose isn't out of the woods just yet, the Thai police and foreign ministry are joining forces to arrest Rose.

"Sek Wannamethee, Director-General of the Department of Information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told journalists on Thursday that the foreign ministry, the Royal Thai Police and the Office of the Attorney General are currently working on legal provisions to bring Chatwadee Amornpat, aka Rose, back from London to face lese majeste charges in Thailand for insulting the Thai royal family on Facebook and YouTube.

Sek Wannamethi said Thailand has an extradition treaty with the United Kingdom, but Thai officials need to look into the details of the treaty, as Ms Amornpat has British nationality, before any further action is taken.

The Royal Thai Embassy in London, in the meantime, will cooperate by verifying the addresses of Ms Amornpat and other lese majeste offenders in the United Kingdom."

Sounds like they're making this one of their top priorities.

They can make it whatever priority they wish, not even a remote chance of this happening.

Perhaps not officially, but remember that the UK has a lot of vested interests in Thailand, including commercial and as allied countries.

I am not suggesting anything illegal here, but underhanded agreements can be made behind closed doors between Governments and this woman could receive an unofficial warning to either take a schtum powder or face the consequences, as has happened in the past to those considered as enemies of a State or bad for International relations between countries and in risk of creating such International incidents. Also considering that if in the events of problems with China or North Korea in the future, Thailand is the allies friendly base in South East Asia and there is no way the allies would want to jeopardise that, something similar to Israel being the allies unofficial base in the middle east. Then of course there are the fanatics and the loons who may have other ideas on how to shut this woman up.

In my opinion, this woman is in a no win situation whatever her intentions and has made her point. She would be wise to cease and desist her public activities now, falling out of the limelight while the going is good.

The British Ambassador has made it clear that LM is not an offence in the UK, and thus extradition is impossible. The Thai officials concerned know this but will continue with their efforts to show they are loyal servants of the Junta.

The whole affair is utterly trivial and unimportant, and no great significance is really given to it by either side (despite the IQ lowering theatrics in Bangkok).

The Junta is desperate for international understanding and it is inconceivable it would jeapardise relations with a country like the UK (and by extension the EU) over the antics of a (unbalanced?) woman.

Your comments on her "no win situation" and advice she 'cease and desist" are nonsense .She can continue with her tomfoolery as long as she likes. Those who physically threaten or intimidate her will be punished under UK law.

A criminal swap (whatever you call it) could be an opportunity. There are many British criminals and pedophiles hiding in Thailand. The UK would love to have them back into their country.

But in British eyes she is not a criminal since she has committed no offence. You seem to be spectacularly thick since this point has been made several times. As for criminals on Thai or British soil there is an extradition treaty in place which takes care of this.

Are you seriously suggesting William Hague would approve the extradition of a British citizen to an undemocratic foreign country, that represses free speech and media, to face political charges the UK oppose?

Either your a troll or hopelessly misinformed.

I doubt if the British government would approve of extraditing a so-called British citizen for crimes that are not considered crimes in the UK. That is because the UK is a true democratic country and bear a duty of certain protection and rights to it`s citizens.

But this does not mean to say that this woman has not become an embarrassing problem. It appears that this is going well beyond just a rant on facebook and that this Thai woman is taking her strong anti monarchy and political views against Thailand to higher and even extremist levels.

If this woman progresses with her strong anti Thailand views then it could escalate into something that could affect International relations and even into an International incident, possibly even affecting the British ex-pats living here in Thailand, plus if this woman conveniently meets with an unfortunate accident, is murdered or is physically brought to Thailand against her will to face changes, than Thailand could face International condemnations, so this really is a delicate situation.

I do condemn the British Government that seem to hand out British passports like candy, without properly vetting and investigating the past exploits of the applicants and so the dilemma of this lese majeste case and the UK`s relationship with Thailand is now firmly placed in the hands of the British authorities.

'Britain is a true democtatic country!! Rubbish...Internment without trial in Northern Ireland, Invasion of Falkland Islands, Afghanistan and Iraq!! The continued election of private educated elite persons who strive to maintain the status quo and keep the masses under control to protect their business interest...Add to all this the injustices of the former British Empire, responsability for slavery etc...and you get to see how great the UK really is.....

Why "so called" British citizen? Shes a British citizen, period.

The truth is the UK cares very very little about Thai relations. Trade between the 2 countries is minuscule in the grand scheme of things, and (perhaps unlike the US) the UKs interest in the area relates solely to trying to increase investment from China.

There is no way she could be "physically brought to Thailand" and anyone who harms here faces the full wrath of British law as "DJKen" is now finding out.

This is only a big event in the eyes of some Ultra Nationalist Thais and their retiree cheer leaders on here trying to pass their days away. No one in the UK has even heard of it and its incredibly low on the priority of British foreign policy.

I do condemn the British Government that seem to hand out British passports like candy, without properly vetting and investigating the past exploits of the applicants and so the dilemma of this lese majeste case and the UK`s relationship with Thailand is now firmly placed in the hands of the British authorities.

Are you suggesting the UK should reject visas based on foreign laws rather than British ones? laugh.png For example reject a Saudi Arabian woman for having the audacity to drive a car on her legal record? Deluded facepalm.gif

OK then, I will rephrase my comments for the benefit of the feeble minded, Britain likes to give the semblance that is a true democratic country and as I said previous this woman`s views are proving an embarrassment both to Thailand and for Britain because it could affect relations between the 2 countries. No other ways to explain this or state by a means that some can comprehend as the implications go way over some posters heads.

Seen the FB page...another Red Terrorist groupy. She thinks, that the terrorist Ko Tee, is a hero. Shameful, for a former Thai citizen to post such hateful things and images against the monarchy. sick.gif.pagespeed.ce.tVTSNn-2vr.pngxwacko.png.pagespeed.ic.jGW10VtQsI.png

Yes, shameful for one to stand for human rights, human dignity, freedom of thought, freedom of expression and the freedom to articulate one's beliefs and perception of the problem. Diisgraceful that those disagreeing with her political ideologies would demean or slander her or threaten her family, but this does seem to be the way of the land. Any wonder why things are such a mess and history keeps repeating itself.

As previously noted there are absolutely no grounds for Rose to be extradited on charges of LM in Thailand.

LM is not a crime in the UK and the extradition agreement only covers acts deemed as crimes in BOTH countries.

Furthermore even if she did not hold British Citizenship she would be able to convincingly argue that she would not be given a fair trial in Thailand.

The Junta has stated that LM crimes will be tried at Military courts, additionally, the likelihood of the proceedings to be held in camera would be reason enough to oppose any extradition request.

There is no "delicate situation" nor is there a "dilemma of this lese majeste case and the UK's relationship with Thailand" as the conditions of the extradition treaty are clear and unambiguous.

Condemn the British Government as much as you want but the right to freedom of expression is a core value protected by law, maybe Thailand should take note.....

Any country if government that could be rocked to the core by this situation or even give a second thought to such matter has some serious underlying issues. Who cares what this girls says. If the shoe fits . . ., if not, throw it away and move on.

A little dangerous for the lady (sic) to travel in Europe. Thailand does have extradition laws and many of them have Lese Majesty offences on their books. Germany for one has an offence of insulting a Foreign Head of State. She may be back here to face the music and I do not think it is music she would like.

Hang on a second, are there actually posters here that think the British government should extradite this lady for freedom of speech in a country in which she is now a citizen? clap2.gifcheesy.gif

Can't say I agree with her being a hardcore red (We all know Thaksin has nefarious desires but that is another unspeakable issue) but in the country in which she now resides she CAN be a republican and not be thrown in jail for airing those views. I'm sorry is that a bad thing?

What would be worse for the UK, a tiny bit more souring of relations of Thailand or an international shit storm should they give this girl over for breaking LM laws? Some of the replies here make me laugh, so as retribution the Thai government are going to start kicking out all us Brits? Welcome to diet North Korea ladies and gents, agree with us out it's chains and the boot for you! cheesy.gif

Shes safe to travel to the continent and this is why she has done so. Too many on here forget that Thailands world standing is essentially that of a 3rd world country, sitting somewhere between Burkina Faso and Nepal in the world hierarchy. Whilst some countries do have extradition agreements on crimes in BOTH countries, no country is going to be too bothered about telling them to **** off over stuff like this.

Its just an irrelevance to those in the civilised world.

She's not using it against a country though is she? She is airing views that she was unable to in Thailand due to a law that she dis-agrees with. This has now snow balled into the current situation.

Freedom of speech should be an unlimited right though shouldn't it? Going to prison for speaking your mind is atrocious in this day and age.

Your kidding right ?

The whole point of freedom of speech is to be able to say what you wish without fear of persecution.

Those that do end up in a free country certainly have the right to express or to speak about.views that may be suppressed or taboo under threat of jail in their own country

I don't think you get the point of freedom of speech m8, there isnt any point having it if people still have to watch what they say in regards of where they came from.

Do you think that Muslim women living in the UK should not be able speak out and condemn harsh treatment from where they come from ? yknow, like stoning for saying things a woman isnt allowed to or for not wearing a full head to toe covering or go out in public etc. LM is no different and open to criticism in a free speaking country

You dont seem to grasp the ideal of freedom of speech, it is amongst other reasons, there to allow people to bring injustices and draconian suppressive laws in other countries to the foreground and campaign against them if they choose without fear of being persecuted by those very countries that they left in the first place.

BTW to the numpties who think the UK isnt a free or democratic country youll be hard pushed to find one more so anywhere in the world or more diverse in cultures and supportive of peoples right to free speech.

Its not the UKs fault other countires dont have the same standards or respect for it.

This story is not even a sliver of a story in the UK. In fact, if it ever does become one, its pretty likely it will simply serve to hold Thailand up to even more ridicule.

It might become the second thing that Thailand is famous for, after, chilis of course.......

If she had claimed political persecution, that would have actually speeded up her application. It is the Thai government which is 110% in the wrong in trying to condemn this BRITISH CITIZEN.

I do condemn the British Government that seem to hand out British passports like candy, without properly vetting and investigating the past exploits of the applicants and so the dilemma of this lese majeste case and the UK`s relationship with Thailand is now firmly placed in the hands of the British authorities.

It is the Thai government which is 110% in the wrong in trying to condemn this BRITISH CITIZEN.

lol, after chills of course! that is priceless!

Welcome to diet North Korea ladies and gents, agree with us out it's chains and the boot for you! cheesy.gif

Yes

Yes to which point old chap?

To the fact that Freedom of Speech is not an unlimited right and if someone comes to live in a country they should not continue to use it as a base against other countries.

Britain has quite strict rules which govern freedom of speech. It is under British law, not a limitless right. She hasn't contravened any of the laws governing free speech.

If that's ok with you, I will continue to defend her right to free speech, even if I don't like or agree with it. She can say what she likes until she incites someone to violence, threaten national security, or use hate speech to discriminate or publically harm. I still can't work out what damage she did to anyone or anythign anyway. This ridiculous effort to shut people up, makes me wonder why everyone is so petrified that the Monarchy is being slighted.

Its just words......

A criminal swap (whatever you call it) could be an opportunity. There are many British criminals and pedophiles hiding in Thailand. The UK would love to have them back into their country.

Carefully, they might try and extradite you!
