"Your flash player may be out of date" TOT DNS compromised?

Recommended Posts

I had been getting a lot of pop ups saying "WARNING! Your Flash Player may be out of date. Please update to continue" when visiting Facebook, Youtube and Google. My flash player is the latest version and this pop up was an obvious fake. Look at the screenshots:

Note the address that the install button links to in the bottom left

I was getting the pop ups in Firefox, IE and Chrome.

After doing some research I noticed that I would get these pop ups on both my Android tablet and iPhone as well! So I suspected there was something wrong with the modem/router. After doing some googling I changed my DNS servers to OpenDNS and the problem disappeared...

Did anyone else on TOT experience this today?

I keep a really clean system, so I was very surprised to be "infected". Wish I had figured out the DNS issue before running a bunch of aggressive anti malware applications because I have had 3 BSODs in the last 2 hours :/

To eliminate this problem have you tried changing your DNS to another DNS (OpenDNS or similar), clearing your browser history and then flushing your DNS cache? If you do this then you'll know if it is the DNS or not.

Firstly YOU DO NOT NEED TO SIGN UP (only for emphasis...not shouting). Follow the instructions for a router, computer, etc.

After setting that up you should clean your browser history. Now close your browser and "flush" DNS.

You could also reboot before reopening your browser for extra surety, if paranoid.

Can somebody post a "Changing DNS Servers for technologically challenged individuals (dummies) " tutorial. I haven't a clue.

There's a free utiility called Dns Jumper v1.0.6 which is perfect for 'dummies'. It makes it very easy to change or flush your DNS server as the traditional way to change DNS in Windows is a bit challenging for 'technologically challenged individuals'. It's a portable app so you can put it on a USB memory stick to change the DNS server on other computers without installing.
