US boxer Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter dies

TORONTO: -- US former boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, whose wrongful conviction for murder caused an international outcry, has died at the age of 76.

He died on Sunday at his home in Toronto, Canada, his friend and former co-defendant John Artis, confirmed.

Carter spent 19 years in prison for three murders in New Jersey in 1966.

The alleged racial motivations behind the incarceration became well-known in Bob Dylan's song Hurricane, several books and a film.

Artis said Carter had died in his sleep, following a battle with prostate cancer, AP news agency reported.

Carter was charged with the murder of three white people in New Jersey in 1966.

He was convicted on the evidence of two white prosecution witnesses, who were attempting to commit a burglary near the location of the murders.

He later admitted they did it.

He later admitted they did it.

Really?

I've never heard that before. What's your source?

He later admitted they did it.

And where did you get that totally incorrect information?

This was probably the most publicized case of false testimony based on race with the added element of police corruption that the USA had ever seen at that time.

At no time has Carter or Artis admitted guilt.

Carters and Artis were released and the police declined to pursue a third trial.

ThIs story has been covered comprehensively in newspaper reports, books, television and cinema, none of these media has ever concluded that either Carter or Artis (his co-accused) was guilty of murder.

He lost the support of his celebrity supporters in his work helping other falsely imprisoned inmates, after beating a woman unconcious in a hotel room.

A thug yes, a murderer no!
