BANGKOK, April 21 – The Thai private sector has been urged to improve its competitive edge to cope with global development and impact from advanced technology, a senior Commerce Ministry said.

Srirat Rastapana, Permanent Secretary for Commerce, said changes in the 21st century will have an impact on Thailand’s labour, social and environmental status, compelling the private sector to urgently upgrade its competitiveness.

She said the World Economic Forum 2014 survey ranks Thailand at the same level as last year, and fourth among 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), after Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.

Thai manufacturers will have to emphasise the use of technology for development, innovation, and research and development. she said, while the public sector will have to work in parallel with private enterprises.

Ms Srirat said the public and private sectors must be open to the universal mindset and develop their organisations and personnel to embrace new technologies.

The world in the 21st century will be borderless and global problems cannot be solved by a single country, the permanent secretary said, calling on private enterprises of all sizes, whether small, medium or large, to focus more on corporate social responsibility both internally and externally.

Natural resources must be used with regard to co-existence in society and personnel within organisations must be encouraged to pay more attention to social responsibility, she said.

Ms Srirat said the world has gone through an industrial revolution with labour forces being replaced by machinery, but the new era will involve substitution of brains with machinery, and advanced technology will have economic, social and environment impacts.

The Thai private sector should be prepared for labour shortage as Thailand is heading towards an ageing society while the labour force should be developed to handle new technology, she said, adding that human resources will be significant to social and economic development in the future.

Under multilateralism, entrepreneurs must emphasise improvement of skills, intelligence, creativity, team work among co-workers and desire for innovation, she said. (MCOT online news)

'Open up to the universal minset' - could be difficult. In the schools most children have no idea where Singapore is ,let alone Australia or America. In one class recently a pupil(aged 14) when asked where England was pointed to China on the map! No chance I'm afraid for the future entrepreneurs of Thailand!

So England isn't in Beijing, must tell Mr "T".

Finally they admit that there is life behind Thailand's borders.

Unfortunately, the old fashioned self serving elite, will never allow for entrepreneurs to be creative or to critically challenge old ideas and outdated cultural business norms for the sake o saving face....

Yes I know Thai bashing's a popular sport but most can see good with the bad.

Your so called 'self serving elite' are the entrepreneurs, like the ones who run the business that keeps this country going.

Look at the Thai companies who have expanded overseas, the beer companies who are sponsoring English football teams, plenty to choose from if you care to look.

I am sure most private enterprise is way ahead of the Govt on this.

After all if they make balls ups, don't keep up, they lose money but as we see no matter how many mistakes Govt makes they still get paid.

Well give that old recalcitrant Mahtair in Malaysia some due , unless it has changed, but years ago he issued a directive , that all UNI'S must talk English in lectures, as what was the use of educating everyone in bahasa, all you are doing is trapping all your degree holders into your country boarders , he could see the need for change and did it with English,, which is not what Thailand is doing, so global changes in Thailand needs education change as well.coffee1.gif

Uni's must SPEAK English in lectures (and since universities don't speak it would be, USE the English language during lectures)

When the lecturers in the universities said they couldn't teach the students about the new technologies as they themselves didnt understand it, it is going to take a bit more than a few words to get people upto speed and challenge the world.

Unfortunately you can only teach someone what you know and as the Thai people, in general, do not have a sufficient command of English to read technical papers they will not adequately be able to take up the call.

Other countries have benefited from hiring people of different nationalities but still Thailand keeps a closed shop at the expense of knowldege.

Wake up Thailand, the world can offer a lot if you let it

"The Thai private sector has been urged to improve its competitive edge to cope with global development and impact from advanced technology...." and a total lack of state competence, endemic corruption in the state sector, rampant protectionist laws, zero state planning, etc etc etc

Maybe they should set their target as something easier, like maybe AEC integration?

No chance unless Thailand changes it's mindset; and it is Thailand's cultural, economic and social mindset that needs to change. Thailand will slip behind the rest of ASEAN unless it moves with the times, culturally, economically and socially.

what a joke!

they are as xenophobic as the chinese are.

they kinda deserve to be left behind if they cant even manage basic infrastructure issues like clean fkn water, and water management in general.

they waste, destroy, pollute and ridicule anything/anyone with actual value.

i say let them eat bugs & drink sugarwater/laokao.

they've earned it
