Where do you find styptic pencils in Thailand?

Featured Replies

I'm looking for any type of common topical antihemorrhagic or "hemostatic agent". (i.e., for stopping minor skin cut bleeding, like shaving nicks)

Common styptic pencils, which were traditionally in every old-fashioned shaving kit, are made principally from aluminum sulfate (alum) with the remainder being titanium dioxide and alcohol and/or fragrances.

I have tried just about every pharmacy and department store, and even the occasional well-educated English-speaking Thai pharmacist seems to have no idea where to find styptic pencils, nor do they know where to find the generic ingredient, "alum" (aluminum sulphate)

I even had a knowledgeable Thai-Chinese chemist write it all down in Thai squiggles, and I've carried that paper from store to store, and I still got nothing but wild-eyed stares, and "..me-no-have.."

Do any of you know where to find styptic pencils in Thailand?

Thanks.

JD

I know I bought one once, but can't remember where it was, and would like to get some more.

Somewhere in a pharmacy I found a product that serves the same purpose -- the same chemicals are delivered on small thin sheets from a dispenser similar to one that also is used to deliver small sheets of breath freshening sheets. The little sheets are about 1 cm x 2 cm. You stick them on the wound and they dissolve. There are about 10 in a small plastic package. Keep a packet in Hubby's shaving kit.

I suspect most Thai men just grab there wife's crystal alum underarm deodorant or there own modern packaged tube so do not need the pencil.
