angryfarang Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 What's the procedure? Do we need to book an appointment, or just turn up? I'm assuming they'll ask for my passport.
PoorSucker Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Just show up, I did 08.08.08 Bring your passport and copies. Her ID-card, copy house book, divorce paper (if any) Affirmation to marry from your Embassy, must have Embassy stamp. Translation into Thai of the affirmation and approved with an MFA (ministry of foreign affairs) stamp. You are supposed to bring two witnesses, but the girls at the Amphur were happy to sign as witnesses for me and the missus. And congratulations.
angryfarang Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Thanks! With regards to the house book, we rent a house - however I have copy of the Tabian Baan - will that be OK? How do I get the affirmation to marry from my Embassy? I'm British - is it something you can apply for online? Or do I need to visit the British Embassy in Bangkok? Thanks again.
notmyself Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 You need to go to the British embassy in BKK to get it, pick it up the next day but forget the cost. The affirmation just says you are single (in reality). No big deal at all and you do not need to register the marriage because of some agreement. However, you do need to register your divorce if that happens for some reason.
angryfarang Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Thanks guys. I guess a trip to Bangkok is on the cards. Do I just turn up at the embassy for this without an appointment? Do they have different opening times, etc? Sorry for all the questions.
notmyself Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Just to add. I had to get my divorce paper 'green eagled' too but perhaps that was because I was not marrying a Thai.
chiang mai Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If you're divorced you need an original copy of the divorce decree, at least UK citizens do. 1
notmyself Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If you're divorced you need an original copy of the divorce decree, at least UK citizens do. And translated then approved by the MFA... AKA green eagled.

AKA green eagled. Can Liz Luxen do this? or do I need to get this done in Bangkok as well? Anyone can do that for you but you have to go to BKK to go to the embassy anyway so why pay someone else to do it. It just means you gat a later flight back on the same day. Sorry, yes has to go by the MFA which is in BKK.
angryfarang Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 So after the embassy, I need to go get it translated (any recommendations?) and then take it to the MFA for approval (where is this? how long does that take?) Sorry for all the questions.
notmyself Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 First flight out Wednesday. Apply for affirmation to marry at embassy then go over the road (ish) and get decree absolute translated along with affirmation which they do not have yet. They are all the same... only the name changes. Next day pick up from embassy and collect translations then off to MFA. Express service (was 80 Baht per page so 160 Baht)... off to airport and back on Samui for dinner.
notmyself Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Leave embassy and turn right. Go to intersection and there are dozens offering the same service. All the letters are the same except for the names... Form letter really. Where is the MFA? http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/571103-trip-to-thai-ministry-of-foreign-affairs-for-legalization-of-translation/
notmyself Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 As I remember express was 2 hours while normal was 4. Been a while though.
samuijimmy Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Getting married is easy, living with them is hard. Maybe that works both ways .......?...... 1
PoorSucker Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 With regards to the house book, we rent a house - however I have copy of the Tabian Baan - will that be OK? It's not the house book where you live. It's the house book where your GF is registered on, probably her parents.

Thai Bairn Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I just got it done last week. Handed in the paper, paid and it was ready in about 10 mins. If you don't want to go to the MFA any of the translation places can arrange that and post it all back to you on Samui for a fee. 2
angryfarang Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 This might be a silly question... Can I get away with going to the MFA in long shorts, a smart shirt and flip-flops? I'm assuming I'll be ok entering the UK embassy, but not sure about the Thai government building? I guess I've been on Samui too long, I don't own any long pants or shoes...

Let the translation company take care of the MFA verification. I had to spend 4 hours in line there Anyway it's at the government complex in Chaeng Wattana, with the protests going on, you really don't want to got there.
angryfarang Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Thanks PoorSucker - can you recommend a translation company? Phew! That's lucky, I thought I might have to buy some trousers and shoes for a minute!

I'm going to see the translation company that took care of my sons birth certificate here on Samui. A friend need to get his daughter birth certificate translated. I'll get back to you later today.

PoorSucker Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Thanks PoorSucker - can you recommend a translation company? The company I used is located between fishermans village and Banrak, right side just before orgasmic. Went by today and he is closed until the 14th of May. PM sent with telephone and e-mail.
BigC Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script> Thanks guys. I guess a trip to Bangkok is on the cards. Do I just turn up at the embassy for this without an appointment? Do they have different opening times, etc? Sorry for all the questions. try calling the embassy tell them your situation and they should guide you through. If you go all the way to bangkok to get the paper then you can get married in Bangkok at the same time. If you marry in Bangkok you can pay extra to register your marriage with the English embassy after.

You perhaps presume the OP knows that he does not in fact need to register the marriage at the UK embassy.
Popular Post angryfarang Posted May 9, 2014 Author Popular Post Posted May 9, 2014 Hi Guys - I spoke with the embassy and they said no need to make an appointment, just turn up - so will be there at 8.00 with my document. I'd love to take my girl with me but she's heavily pregnant. So will marry in Samui. 3
