"CO-HABITATING WITH THE VIETNAMESE - The attitude to the law is relaxing over recent years, but the laws are still on the books. It is illegal for a foreigner to share a room with a Vietnamese of the opposite sex without a certificate of engagement or marriage.

http://visitingvietnam.weebly.com/laws.html

"Remember that under Vietnamese law, it is illegal to take a Vietnamese national to a hotel

room. While this law is rarely enforced, you could find yourself in even deeper water if you

report a crime disclosing that you shared a room with a Vietnamese national.

http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Vietnam

"All the hotels we stayed at in Vietnam had notices in their information guides stating that

it is illegal to have a local Vietnamese stay in your room. This of course is aimed at the sex

industry and preventing tourists from taking advantage of the locals, but it may make things

very difficult for you. There was absolutely no ambiguity in these notices.

"If your girlfriend is still a Vietnamese citizen both of you may find yourselves with a lot of

explaining to do. From reading these forums I've seen that the Vietnamese people can be

very nasty towards one of their own if they so choose.

http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowTopic-g293921-i8432-k4977959-Unmarried_couples_sharing_a_hotel_room-Vietnam.html

"Yes its officially against the law, but most hotels do not care so much as one hotel put it -

we are out to make dosh not worry who is in your hotel room. wink.png

http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowTopic-g293921-i8432-k4977959-o10-Unmarried_couples_sharing_a_hotel_room-Vietnam.html

"Occasional crackdowns from police on adult entertainment establishments and an antiquated law that makes it officially illegal for a Vietnamese national to stay in a hotel room with a foreigner haven’t done much to put a damper on things, but it can be a real pain finding a place that will let you retire to your temporary quarters with a local friend (or two) in tow.

"Unofficially, the usual advice given to visitors is that one and two star hotels will allow local guests in the rooms while better facilities will not. That is not a hard and fast rule however. There are exceptions and sometimes a little monetary lubricant can ease things up. No matter what the star rating of the hotel, local guests can usually visit without problem before 10 or 11 PM.

"Well, when I was in Vietnam the police would come into my hotel room around 2 a.m. to check for hookers! Since your passport is turned over to the desk clerk when you check in the police can confiscate that passport until you pay a huge bribe! The inspection was thorough, they (police) looked under beds, in closets, behind doors, in bathtubs, etc. They seem disappointed when they leave and find no VN citizens!....

A few hotels got raided by police very often, like almost everynight or every week, at least....

Technically its illegal for foriegner to have vietnamese gf spend the night in the room....

http://www.travelblog.org/Topics/10525-1.html

So, my question is why on earth would you want to repeatedly subject yourself to these circus jesters dressed up as policemen? Sounds pretty lame to me. What buttheads. What a ridiculous and comical govt. Hasn't anyone explained to them that communism is and was a failed experiment?

I guess you are unfamiliar with the application of laws under a communist dictatorship. Sent away can mean being sent to a labor camp, sent to prison, or just being abused in jail for a few weeks. It is all pretty ugly stuff, being perpetrated by a foul, heinous, violent government bent on preaching a false morality. Definitely not something to joke about, especially if you are a poor woman who was dragged off by the pig headed, black hearted policemen.

In another posting you ranted for many lines about the scarce social qualities of Vietnamese people. This one seems to be taken from a psy-op leaflet of the 60s. The posting immediately above is also a vehement example of outdated and misplaced neo-colonialism propaganda. Do yourself a favor, stitch these memorable pieces together and publish an e-book, sure you will find readers.

Well, the lack of warmth and social skills was from personal experience on three trips spread out over 13 years. Some of the least impressive people I have ever met.

The other reference is third party, I admit. Are you saying the prostitutes who are arrested are treated kindly and with respect?

No, I'm not saying anything. Good that you shared sincere experience for the others to know. I guess something must have kept your returning for 13 years, it must not be so horrific a place. I've been just a tourist in Vietnam, so I don't have much to contribute.

Only three trips over 13 years. Not alot. First trip was to North. Really unimpressed. Unfriendly people. Real cows. Second trip to South. Much better. But still not what I would call welcoming. Third trip was with Thai girlfriend. They all thought she was Viet, and seemed to hate me for being with a local. I do not get that hostility in Thailand with her. I will more than likely never return.

I heard they get sent away for re education if caught with foreigners ?

Really?

The get educated how to pronounce "Me so horny"& "Me love you long time" without an accent? laugh.png

This is absolutely insane. You do realize Vietnamese lawmakers are having a serious debate about legalizing prostitution. You have seen one too many episodes of Oliver North on Fox News. Travel with Vietnamese women? No problem. Having an overnighter? Like I wrote earlier, the woman simply needs to provide a govt issued ID for record keeping. Nobody--Viet or foreigner--need worry about those draconian measures cited by the previous poster. The worst possible outcome for anyone violating statutes that are rarely enforced anyway is the handover of a few hundred thousand VND to make a cop walk away happy. Hell, the cheapest and most accommodating "massage parlors" in VN are generally attached to the few communist party owned hotels left in the country.

http://tuoitrenews.vn/society/24841/vietnam-will-never-legalize-prostitution-deputy-pm

Just to provide a bvit more evidence on the liberalization of Vietnamese society, here is an article comparing same-sex marraige laws in VN to those in the US.

Women are much too good for you obviously. Hopefully they would see through you quickly, straight to your wallet and then leave asap.

Vietnamese women are not at all embarrassed to be with foreigners. It's the only place I've ever been in Asia where they were also keen to be a financial equal and would pay for food, drinks, etc. too. Yes, there are fewer "English speakers" in Vietnam but those who do speak English tend to speak it to a much higher standard than most Thais. The only issue I had was that they all seemed to want to get married after spending a week with you.

How about for Black guys. I have a friend who is moving there as he is convinced that the Vietnamese love Black guys from America.....He got picked up and thrown into the back of a police pick-up in Pattaya with a bunch of Africans so he went to Vietnam and is super happy to leave here. He swears the women there love him.....hr meets them online...I think they love his wallet. Much the same as here......

Ha...if you think Thai women are tricky little vixens then the Vietnamese women make the Thai women look amateurish.

You will learn soon enough...lol

Meantime, you will undoubtedly get yourself into some "tight places" while living there. :P

Cheers

Almost no English there and difficult to make contact on a daily bases,

Much more spoken in Vietnam compared to Thailand and developing fast and with focus on conversation skills.

Just got back from Hanoi ---staying in the French quarter for just over a week----the standard of English is defiantly higher than BKK.....of course there are some knock out girls there...(as there are in Thailand)  most things seemed cheaper (but I wasn't renting/paying electric etc) so was difficult to say-----street food is on par or a little more expensive...... noodles $us2-4.

.

If I was single I might give it a go----but I wouldn't rush to it......Thailand (if you pick your location) I think could be a lot more fun........but 1 week....I am not an expert.......:coffee1:

After having another look at the scene if this isn't the worst written and staged scene in the history of movie making I really don't know what is. Her accent is pathetic probably found her in a coffee shop in London. Remember this movie was shot in southern England. The dialogue is so stereotypical and inaccurate. I saw this movie when it came out and liked it but I will have to have another look after reviewing this scene lol.

Just google on youtube:

Full Metal Jacket - Hooker Scene

That seen really turned me on before I visited S.E.A, but not after I knew what women are really like here. A hooker that acted like that, would have a screw loose for sure!

Vietnamese speak English 20 times better than a Thai's! They actually teach them  English starting at age 5. In Thailand they

rarely teach them English! It's against their Culture!

Many cultural similarities with Thai women but IMHO much more beautiful and gentle. They genuinely love sex and will often indulge without there being monetary strings attached. The main difference is, as has been noted above, the attitude of others to foreigner/local relationships. It is illegal for unmarried mixed couples to stay in the same room and many hotels (certainly 4 and 5 star) will insist you book separate rooms. Also there is no bar scene like there is in Thailand (where is there?). There are obviously hookers in most hotel bars and there are several bars in Saigon (called "bier hom") where you can go upstairs for a BJ or take the girls home if you wish. You can also get happy endings (and sometimes more) in massage parlors.

Best starting point is Vietnamcupid.com

Don't believe the crap about them not being "a happy lot." While they have every reason to be downcast given their history and circumstances they are extremely resilient and friendly and respond very well to foreigners, especially away from the big cities - same as most countries.

I know I am going to get alot of flak for writing this, but I do believe in general, most Thai women are not that fond of having sex. Of course there are exceptions. But most do not seem like it means all that much to them, and if given a choice? I have heard this from countless men. In the PI, it is completely different. Many love sex. Genuinely love it. Sounds like that may be the case in Vietnam too.

Of course, there are many here that perform sex for the living, or as a sideline. Many of them are good actresses, and perform with charm, a good attitude, and decent skills. But, are they enjoying it? And one can ask the same of the civilian population here. While I am sure some are into it, many are not.

I would like to quote what a good friend advised me about Vietnamese versus Thai women.   He is a Vietnam war veteran (3 tours) who subsequently lived 13 years in Pattaya, with many side trips to sample the Viet ladies in Cambodia.   So we're talking working girls here, not the mainstream.

"90% of the Viet girls were a delight.   By contrast, 90% of the Thais were a waste of time."

You've "never heard of anyone being fined or sent to jail for this"? I have, even before i had ever read the following article, which was posted earlier in this thread:

http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/ReadersSubmissions2014/reader8709.htm

"...Every guest in a hotel room must be registered, and it is illegal for a foreigner to share accommodations with a Vietnamese national."

http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/country/vietnam.html

"Most hotels everywhere in VietNam discourage foreign males from bringing Vietnamese females into their hotel rooms..."

"...if you can get a girl to take you to a hotel without registration, your safety is compromised and many males have been robbed down to their underpants after being drugged and / or robbed at knife point."

http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowTopic-g293925-i8433-k927247-Is_this_hotel_girl_friendly_and_close_to_nightlife_women-Ho_Chi_Minh_City.html

This Stickman article reads like someone who has never had a girlfriend imagining what it would be like in a James Bond mixed with sexpat tale of pure and total fantasy!
This :
"Po Nani comes back and hands over her panties all embarrassed to which I give a big sniff smiling and tuck into my shirt pocket with it sticking out a tad."

And this :

"30 minutes before go time, I set up the table settings, pour two glasses of wine and lay her undies on her plate."

Full of the night before's discharge and remains of the last punter's efforts is that? :bah:

my girlfriend recently brought up something semi related to that.

I don't recall what I asked her but it was something to do with sex and she told me "I am not an expert like bar girls".

I had a chuckle and told her that I never had a bar girl (never even been in a bar here, don't drink, don't care for em) but that I had seen some amateur thai bargirl porn and.. even tho I wouldn't dare say 100%, almost 100% of the girls seemed to be bored out of their mind and barely doing anything... which is not exactly my idea of a good time.

of course, having sex for work with most times disgusting, drunk, old and fat sweaty farangs must not be the best experience ever but.. hey! you could tell they are not into it. lol

So,to summarise, the rules of South-East Asia are as follows :
1.) Have tourist, have lady boom boom.

2.) No have tourist,no have lady boom boom.

The major problem with the Vietnamese female are the anatomical dissimilarities. For example, what is normally vertical is horizontal.

Do you mean they spend their days lying down?

One of the biggest differences there, is there is a very powerful taboo against western men being with a local woman. Very unlike Thailand. So, you will find the woman will not even be willing to be seen in public with you. If she does, loads of scorn will be heaped on both of you. Vietnamese are largely a very cold, distant, closed minded people. They do not carry the level of fulfillment and happiness that the Thai people manage to manifest on a daily basis. Sometimes, it feels like each soul there is carrying the burden of the last two centuries on their shoulders. Not a happy lot by any stretch of the imagination. And I have been there several times, in both the north and the south, though I will say the south is infinitely more pleasant than the north, where an oppressive pall hangs in the air constantly.

I've been to Vietnam, Dien Bien Phu, Hanoi and I never noticed this. No idea what you're talking about. One thing I noticed about Vietnamese girls is that they tend to be more wild in bed than any other Southeast Asian nationality.

yeah, total BS...if anything VN women are more engaging than any other asian females that I've met...and as a foreigner I have friends there that are very capable management types that I hope to visit soon back in Ha Tinh on the north central coast...we became acquainted and they simply figured that I was a nice guy and we became friends...young professional women in their late 20s...

I also met a 'bad girl' inna bar in Vung Tao about 10 years ago and things got outta hand and we fought like lovers...all of the women that I have met there are not afraid of foreigners and engage people on their own terms...and physically they are the most beautiful asian females that I have met...

'tutsi, why are you staring at my bum?'

'ahem, I was just trying to guess yer weight...'

'oh, yew are a delighful old man...'
