CAPO affirms Chalerm will remain as director

BANGKOK, 8 May 2014 (NNT) – The Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) has confirmed that Pol Capt Chalerm Yubamrung can retain his title as CAPO Director despite the Constitutional Court’s recent verdict.

Spokesperson of CAPO Sirima Sunawin stated that CAPO had agreed during its meeting that the Constitutional Court’s verdict on Wednesday to dismiss Mr Chalerm from office was only applicable to his Deputy Prime Minister post. Therefore, the center viewed that he could still carry on his duty as CAPO Chief.

As a matter of fact, the Court’s ruling did not have any effects on Mr Chalerm since his role as Deputy Prime Minister had already ended before the Cabinet ordered the transfer of the National Security Council chief which was deemed unlawful by the judges. Meanwhile, his Labor Minister post, which he assumed afterwards, is also unaffected.

Speaking of the upcoming demonstrations by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) on May 9 and the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) on May 10, Ms Sirima vowed that CAPO would treat both groups equally. The center is making adjustments to the number of security officers, who will be deployed on those days to ensure public safety and prevent untoward incidents.

So their point is that he was NOT in the Cabinet at the time? If so, then the CC made a mistake, a big one. Personally, not knowing directly, I believe that he was in the Cabinet at the time and they are just trying to blow smoke and confuse things.

By the way, I just noted on Wikipedia that Cabinet members do NOT need to be MP's, so anyone can be in the Cabinet. They must also not be mentally infirm and must have a bachelors degree or equivalent. (they can also NOT be a monk, a member of the judiciary or have been bankrupt and a number of other restrictions.).
