May 12, 201411 yr I'm new to Skype, which accessories are easily available here. I'm on Phuket. I would be using from the ethernet. Nothing fancy but would prefer no head'phones. I've looked at a mind boggling array on the net and found there are cam/mic integrated, which would suit. Thanks
May 12, 201411 yr If you don't want a headset of some sort why bother at all - as long as your "device" sound input and output work okay you do not need anything? (I am assuming laptop/tablet or smart phone?)
May 12, 201411 yr It kinda depends if you got a laptop with microphone inside it you dont need a thing. Myself I like a headset as it cancels out noise and its just better. Headsets are the best but are better when you are behind a desktop and have a space where you always use that computer. If you go for headset, buy one with usb out because it will be recognized as a separate device. Then you can setup skype in a way that it always uses that headset, meaning you dont have to plug in and out when you dont want to use it. I always go for the bit more expensive ones as I want quality, however if you don't use it a lot you might not have to spend that much money.
May 12, 201411 yr What do you want Skype for, that's the question. If you want for video chat, well your laptop is the best answer. If its a phone replacement then buy a Skype standalone phone and a skype virtual number http://shop.skype.com/intl/en-th/phones/cordless-router/rtx-dualphone-4088-black/
May 12, 201411 yr Author I did say for use on ethernet, which kind of implies desktop pc, which doesn't have a built in mic. A couple of plug in speakers though. I don't use a smart 'phone (what for?), nor a laptop. Would get all dusted up in my jeep. Thanks.
May 12, 201411 yr Have a look at some of the Plantronics sets, like Blackwire 435 or Back beat 216. Not too big or intrusive to use. Or you might try a set of smartphone earphones that have a built in mic.
May 12, 201411 yr At home I use the Microsoft Lifecam HD 3000. It hooks over the top of your monitor. It's got a high quality self-focusing camera and a sensitive mic. For playback, I use my cheap 3-speaker set for PC - some off-brand whose name I can't remember. I can sit comfortably in front of the PC and make very clear voice calls. I also have an IP phone. A wireless phone with a base unit and power brick that you plug an Ethernet cable into. It's mobile and you can walk about the house with it but I far prefer the PC hookup which, BTW, is cheaper than the IP phone. The HD 3000 lists for $39.95 but can be had for less. Good luck in finding your preferred solution.
May 12, 201411 yr Please note that the phone recommended in post #4 costs 3,699 baht. The Lifecam is available for 1,245 baht on Lazada.
May 12, 201411 yr If external, get something USB connected. Either webcam with microphone, or USB headset. You can buy just a microphone that plugs into the sound card, but I don't recommend those as they seem to not be as good as USB versions. Frequently there's a hum or other interference that the other person will hear. Webcam with mic should work just fine since you have speakers already. It does not have to be Skype Certified, or sold by Skype.

I don't like the idea of talking to someone wearing a headset and noise not an issue so a little web cam with mic sounds about right. I've had too many experiences being sold stuff which is either crap or not for my intended use, which is why I asked here. I use my pc for everything, no tv or smart'phone. The prevailing preference for being connected all day everywhere not to my liking. Everywhere you go now there they all are fiddling with their smart 'phones. Texting/tweeting at restaurants. Once, in a group of friends, one texted another to ask if they'd like to order pudding Thanks to all responders, now I know what to ask for instead of having something pushed on me
May 13, 201411 yr Yeah, try a good webcam by a reputable OEM like M'soft, Logitech, or Creative first. Read some reviews on newegg.com before buying. If not satisfactory you can use a headset, also by a big name--though a friend of mine does well w/ a cheap Genius. I generally like a headset too. I never use a cam unless I need to spy on some Thai lady.
May 13, 201411 yr There are valid reasons for headphones or headsets: they are the cheapest method to deal with Poor Voice Audio pickup, Source Feedback and Echo Cancellation. While these issues can be dealt with in software, it's not always perfect. And just because you perceive others socially misusing technology doesn't mean you personally wouldn't get great personal or productive use out of it. Me, personally, I like to use a bluetooth earpiece connected to a PC, Tablet or Feature/SmartPhone -- Very low profile and avoids the open audio issues.
