EOD police destroy a home-made bomb at Luang Poo's temple

BANGKOK: -- Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) police on Monday destroyed a home made explosive found hidden at the gate of a temple in Nakhon Pathom province.

The bomb made of TNT explosive and motor oil was intended to intimidate the activist abbot of the Wat Ornoi temple, Luang Poo Buddha-issara who planned to return to the temple today to rest after declaring to dissolve the protest site on Chaengwattana road to join the main protest site of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee at the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

Luang Poo was injured by teargas fire when he led protesters to rally in front of CAPO headquarters last week.

A temple worker alerted Kamphaeng Saen district police immediately when he came across a suspected oil container placed near the Mae Kuan-im Chinese shrine in front of the temple on Malaiman-Kamphaengpet Saen road.

Local police arrived and found it to be a home-made bomb. They later called in EOD police from a border patrol police unit to check.

EOD police checked the object and found it to be a bomb made of TNT explosive and gasoline. However, the ignition circuit was not connected indicating the bomb was meant to intimidate people.

EOD police decided to destroy the bomb rather than to detonate it.

Luang Poo Buddha-issara scheduled to return to stay at the temple for a while before returning to join anti government protest again.

Sorry. No evidence of any real facts in this story except that a device was found.

It was either planted by one side or the other, or a third party.

Again, I also ask as another poster queried -- 'why use real TNT and not hook it up'....? A bundle of road flares and a cheap cellphone would have been just as convincing as a threat. The spew that 'they were too stupid to use the materials' is a dead end. No way. TNT ain't cheap and is not easy to obtain. Further, it is very unstable at high temperatures, and Thailand isn't Quebec at this time of year. Very unstable stuff Mr. Nobel invented. When dynamite 'sweats' (being sticks of cotton-soaked TNT) it can blow off at the slightest jostle. That also means the time between when the material was planted and when it was discovered are very close to each other.

I have been to the temples, many times. Workers there are not, well, diligent. The whole event reeks.

There have been dozens of these 'random attacks' and the casualties are not piling up, nor has there been anyone claiming responsibility. If the attacking party wanted real intimidation, there should have been a note claiming responsibility and uttering a threat.

No, I am NOT saying the PDRC planted this to wail 'please help us with a coup, oh shadow military', but that is also a real possibility that can only be discounted by people with an agenda. I am merely pointing out that this monk has been entrenched for months, and has shown a dogged determination. Nothing like this threat will make him quit. Nothing.

To me, it seems like a publicity stunt.

The whole proposition is a zero sum approach, and claiming stupidity is the primary factor involved simply does not wash. Someone is playing a very different game than a casual scan of events will never reveal. Get over it, there are some

v e r y intelligent Thais..and one of them is definitely behind this.

I really think the events of the last few days are pushing this to boiling point, something is gonna blow, and very soon.

Oh yeah something has got to give...tensions are running high, one hopes they can talk this through and sort it all out before it goes too far and more people start getting killed...

Reminds me of the red clown who fired an RPG at the temple of the Emerald Buddha. Fits my definition of terrorism.

Another one who sucked up the "convenient disinformation" of the day. The target was the Defence Ministry.

It doesn't absolve the policeman from the crime but a more discerning questioning of why the government of the day would suggest the target was the Temple of the Emerald Buddha would be a sensible thing to do.

How do you know what was the target? Have you got inside information? Working together hand in hand? Not a cleaver idea. Wise up.

You're absolutely right there, my dear fabs.

"Tharit Pengdit, chief of the Department of Special Investigations, said Friday night that five people, including two police officers, were arrested on charges they were behind a March 20 grenade attack near the Defense Ministry that wounded at least one person.

He claimed the attack was aimed at nearby Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, which is on the grounds of the Royal Palace. Such an attack would infuriate Thais, who revere both the temple and the royal family.

In recent days, the government has stepped up accusations the protesters were trying to undermine the monarchy and the king, which the Red Shirts deny."

"The DSI also claimed that Bandhit confessed to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha as being the real target of the attack and that he was paid 500,000 baht for carrying out the attack. Supposedly the grenade never reached the temple because it hit an electrical line and landed near the ministry. "

"Speaking at a press conference, Pornthip said more evidence was needed to find out whether the RPG round was the sort that is effective at the range of 300 or 600 metres.

"If it is the latter, then there is a possibility that the target was indeed meant to be the Emerald Buddha Temple, which is located 385 metres away from the launch site," she added."

Well as the Mad Monk said; both sides will understand his use of violence so I guess both sides will understand the reds use of violence.

This is so disgusting, considering who the mainstay of visitors are to ALL temples in the kingdom.

The people responsible for this are no less cold than those to behead monks in the south. A religion of peace and the Watt being the house of learning regardless of who the Jaew Awatt (head monk) is for the temple. I would be very disappointed (and shocked) if the temple was being used as a place of "political planning". No temple I have ever been to that I am aware of has had such connotations associated with it. I should mention that most visitors I have seen at the temple are also not people looking to aggressively force change through violence either - mostly old women, or young couples trying to find their happy place together.

To bomb a protest site or rally is one thing, but a house of thought and learning is another; and a truly shameful act. This act puts politics above higher understanding and should be responded to with absolute force against the perpetrators by the Royal Thai Police - though we know it will not; because the Police being a political group will not be able to look beyond politics to see that the actions of the few are destroying the thought and belief systems of a nation.
