Is the European Union on its way out?

Featured Replies

Maybe that's a surprising question as Nigel Farage makes British headlines in his campaign for the EU elections. Amazingly, he has become a hero among young Germans.

A new party, the Alternative for Germany, is projected to win 7% of the votes in these elections. A long way off leading the polls.... but wait a moment, this IS Germany, the core nation, and biggest winner, of the EU. A large proportion of the party's members are academics.

France takes little notice of EU directives, and Britain is decidedly restless. Several of the southern members have had severe economic problems, partly at least due to slipshod drafting of EU rules.

Where does the EU go now? More cohesive, or less? Or a slow reversion to nation states?

I do not believe that the EU can continue in it's present format.

Personally, I would like to see it as solely a Common Market (although I voted against that in the 1970s). Trading without import/export duties would be sensible - implementing a unified set of Standards, as against individual nation-standards would also be a simplification. But that is all. This Eurozone / 'Ever-closer-union' / unification of justice / unification of taxation / unification of working hours and all the other nonsenses that the unelected bureaucrats in Brussels impose upon us should be scrapped. So should the European Parliament - a gross misnomer as it does not enact legislation, merely approves the directives placed before it by the previously mentioned UBBs (Unelected Brussels Bureaucrats)

Still, I will support UKIP in the upcoming election, as will most of East Anglia.

Maybe you can tell me, HB, why UKIP does well in European elections but not in British elections?

Maybe because the English are wussies..?

..or a lifetime of indoctrination against 'extremism'?

..or a combination of both..

Who/which/what are wussies?

It's the same people voting in both elections, so your second suggestion simply doesn't work.

The British don't believe that the European elections are 'proper' elections to send representatives to a 'proper' parliament.

It is simply a weathervane to indicate to the British politicians of the disatisfaction that the public has of their (in)action in domestic matters. I don't know of anyone who regards themselves as being 'European' above being 'British' or 'English' (and certainly the Welsh and Scots put that description before 'British' or 'European')

It's a very new party (est in 1993, just 21 years old) whereas even its youngest rival, Labour, is nearly 115 years old.

When you look at UKIP in this context their rise in popularity is nothing short of spectacular.

UKIP is now becoming a more established party and is ready to make an impact at Westminster. They have just won their 1st MP in the Clacton by election, were beaten into 2nd place by Labour by just 617 votes in another by election and are probably going to win another seat in the next by election to be held in November.

They are currently polling 3rd in the UK, 3 times the support of the Lib Dems.

UKIP will do very well in next year's general election with some predicting they will get dozens of MPs. It's squeaky bum time for the LIB LAB CON. I will certainly be voting for UKIP.

I don't know if it was from the census or not. However BBC earlier this year reported 60% of white people in England class themselves as English.
