Watch what you say, the children are reading too

BANGKOK: -- With the Internet, especially social media, becoming a part of our lives, we should perhaps spare a thought for our children, who now also have access to the Internet. And the only way we can protect them is by being responsible.

As members of the cyber-community, each and every one of us needs to realise that every tweet, post, comment or item we share on the Net can be seen and read by young people.

According to the World Bank, more than 25 per cent of the 15 million children in Thailand have access to the Internet.

ECPAT International, which strives to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children, says the biggest danger for kids are online chatrooms. Besides, 71 per cent of child Net surfers have been found to have visited websites with sexually explicit images, and of them, 52 per cent have shown no regret.

In addition, studies have shown that when children encounter exploitation or are lured by paedophiles online, 45 per cent tend to keep the problem to themselves, making it difficult for parents to protect them.

Ola Jo Tandre, director of sustainability for the Telenor Group, said children needed to be given access to positive, stimulating content and that ensuring online safety was an important priority for everybody.

Telenor has started off by launching the "Use Your Head" campaign against cyber-bullying in Norway. Under this campaign, its people visited more than 450 schools and helped almost 140,000 pupils and 26,000 adults improve their understanding of cyber-bullying.

Six out of 10 young participants said they were glad they now knew how to deal with bullies on the Net, while eight out of 10 said they realised that posting people's pictures without their consent was illegal.

"Use Your Head" is recognised by the European Union as an important initiative to fight digital bullying.

According to an analysis of several surveys, a significant number of children encounter risks online.

These include the 14 million or so youngsters who are exposed to potentially harmful user-generated content; about 35 million who may have experienced cyber-bullying; some 5 million who may have unknowingly subscribed to commercial services; and some 6 million who may have been subjected to misuse of personal data.

To make the Net safe for children, everybody - parents, teachers, authorities, content providers, service providers, connectivity providers, civil society, educators and especially people online - needs to work together. And to start this, we should begin with ourselves and watch what we tweet, post, comment on or share over the Internet and social media.

Maybe if kids in Thailand spent more actually time reading those strange mythical things called 'books' rather than simply cruising farcebook and the like, cyber-bullying would be a non issue, and strangely enough it might actually improve their minds!

Ultimately might end up in a generation or two solving a lot of the problems which bedevil this country

Put your money in the Kar Toooon books futures market as they are the only ones that are read.

The internet is used for much more than Facebook and cyber-bullying,

It is often used used for researching certain subjects.

It is called Googling

When I Google a certain subject about Thailand, guess what? quotes pertaining to that subject from TVF

Come back as returns,

SO WATCH WHAT YOU SAY ON THE INTERNET. it becomes part of the permanent record and attached to your name for a long long time,

And don't think you are safe behind a pseudonym, any one with an ounce of tech savvy can find out who you are in ten seconds flat.

Uh, OK not quite sure what any of this has to do with a fairly benign comment on the lack of actual reading, but whatever floats ya boat

I agree with this, but unfortunately using one's head and being 'responsible' are not part of the Thai vernacular.

In addition a huge amount of net tripe is perpetuated by kids.

Only sure fire way to prevent them seeing porn and trash is to deny them access and you ain't gonna stop that.

It has to do with not turning this in to an other Thai bashing thread

This article is about internet content around the world, and some of the risks it poses to kids.

When we post something on the internet we need to be more careful of what we say, Many people don't realize that what they post is not only available to everyone , including kids, it also has the potential to out last you, in fact it might even be available hundreds of years from now.

And people need to be more careful before they pull the trigger.

I Just did a Google search

"Children reading in Thailand"

Guess what TVF posts on the subject was the Third return

https://www.google.com/search?q=kids+reading+in+thailand&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS569US569&oq=kids+reading+in+thailand&aqs=chrome..69i57.9980j0j4&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8

Anything you or I, say on the internet becomes part of the record, and everyone can read it

Hopefully TVF archives old threads after a couple of years.

But do you see my point?

I Know your intent was benign, but what we dont understand is that some times even benign intents can have adverse consequences. We might think that what we say here on TVF is good fun and stays here with as, after all who but as reads this forum, but that's not the case , as my search example shows, it is available to every one,

Including Children, and not only Thai children

PS: I did not mean to pick on you personally.I chose your post reply as a segway to make my point. and perhaps provide a different direction to this discussion. smile.png

And which mythological book did you become so acidic through, when reading?

Googling in Thailand, as you well know, is used for plagiarism - for those with some knowledge of how to professionally 'copeeeeeee, na krap'.

Researching certain subjects my ass - you are not Thai, for one! As a professional proofreader/editor... I spend half my time getting paid to re-write Chula, Mahidol, King Monkut's.... you name it university's... Master's degrees and PhDs. Such students pay well for re-writing, and 'Turnit-in' no traceability.

Thus, as for your comment about TVF, it is futher down the list than tertiary 'Googling' - as with almost all work I receive I simply travel to the middle of the 'original thesis', copy and paste, and 'Hey Presto' - Googgles give me a 'farang' Master's Degree paper..... so, you should watch what you write on the internet too! Plagiarised copying is also attached to one's name......and I make links to all papers and items found on your favourite topic, and I cryptically attach, to all plagiarised papers, links explaining why they have been copied. wink.png

Also, why do you send TVF users a warning? Watch what we say on the internet, you say? We can write pretty much what we like, if it's within legal bounds of reason or so mundane nobody is really interested. Despite that, keep googling Thailand yourself. You might just find out what a complete mess this kingdom really is. clap2.gifcheesy.gif . Plus, we all love the Prince! He's great! wai.gif

Yes , I get it, you are very intelligentthumbsup.gif

What I don't get is what has any of that has to do with posting on the internet items that are available to children, or for that matter, to anyone.

PS: did you ever consider proofreading your own posts?

Kids say whatever they think an adult wants to hear - these kind of stats are garbage.

"eight out of 10 said they realised that posting people's pictures without their consent was illegal" - how funny, Facebook has made an industry out of that, don't see them getting shut down any time soon.

You know in Amsterdam kids walk past sex shops every day on the way to school with their parents and don't even bother to look twice at the oddities on display - the Dutch are some of the most sexually grown-up and mature people on the planet, unlike Americans and Brits that have a long history of shaming natural sexual urges.

What a load of tosh.

I think the post by GinBoy2 was a quite reasonable comment - I have three kids and they do spend time looking at at Facebook as do most teenagers. I know that social media can be both a blessing (communications and discussion) and a curse (communications and discussion and bullying) - so in this instance one cannot easily cut out the bad without affecting the good, but I am also very glad that my eldest loves to read real books - the kind printed on paper - and I can tell that it does have a very positive effect on her learning and general studies, as it requires a modicum of effort to do it, and involves imagination and that is good exercise for the mind,

The internet can be used for research of course, and my kids use it for that too - BUT - I always tell them to be very careful about what they find and how they accept it - the big problem with the internet is that some totally wrong misinformation spreads exactly like the "Chinese Whispers" game, resulting in some posts which may be totally incorrect, being quoted or copied by other websites in the mistaken belief that they are from an authoritative source - in the end, you can find that a large number of websites quote the same thing, and it all comes out looking legitimate when it is anything but.

Printed books on the other hand usually (not always of course) have to go through more of a review and checking process, and with original authors confirmed in writing (much on the internet originates goodness knows where) I feel that in some instances, a book is a better or at least less unreliable source of information.

NOPE. I don't get paid for that, and as you know yourself, posting on the internet is generically colloquial language usage... so on that one, I say less.

As for fear, concerning posting on the internet, the only posters who should have fears regarding what they post about items pertaining to children are the perverted f<deleted>ers who should have reason for concern about where their interests lay and what their intent is. It is of lesser consequence to those who, as you say are traceable, have no malicious intent and their complete internet history can be traced at ease. There, straightforwardly, lies the massive difference. ;)

'university's' = singular - I reverted after 'names' to levels for each.

'further' I didn't write, but if you meant 'Furthermore' instead of 'Plus', ok.. you'll go far with identifying inaccuracies using colloquialisms.

Google? I REPEATED the previous poster's reference, and goggling (using specs to see things) as another reference, combined. However, thanks for your gracious and unaccurate insight. ;) You'll go far indentifying accurate innacuracies!

You chose to have children

I am not going to tell them not to play on escalators

I am not going to tell them to not run around in stores

I am not going to tell them to wear helmets, or not drive crazy, or not overload their motorcycles

I certainly am not going to censor what I say on the Internet because of their sensitivities

It is your job as a parent to control what they read on the Internet, not mine
