One long beep followed by two short beeps means trouble with your video. Probably the video card needs reseating or replacement. If you Google computer error codes, you will find a list of all of the beeps a computer may make on startup and their explanations.

It's three beeps and apple says that's RAM.

However I see suggestions from people that thermal paste deterioration with humidity (oh yes it's just got up near 100% round here) and heat sinks are common causes.

Thing is RAM is connected to logic board.

So if that was the prob it would be an expensive bit of kit and I would normally consider a new Air and get a faster machine, 4gb RAM and a brand new battery as bonuses.

BUT of course I'm not backed up properly and would like to get this one working if it could be another cause.

Interesting going back to use the old black MacBook which I can remember being so proud of.

Talk about waiting for Godot!

Still, it plays video as well as anything and downloaded to Vuze just as fast too!

As for the Air it is awaiting the return to work in CM on the 5th of my regular guy who I made contact with.

If anyone's come across this problem before I'd still be most grateful to hear about it and the result.

BTW in the meantime if it comes down to getting at the files now lost in the Air:

Somebody told me the solid state drive will slot out easily and can be read from another computer.

I already see on iFixit (no not iFuxit) it is easily removed.

Is it true it can be read elsewhere?

I can see it would slot into another opened up Air which could then be backed up properly, but would an adaptor be possible so it could be treated as an external drive for another laptop?

I found my Mac guy and he suggests he can change the RAM (he will of course check properly if it's the problem, but he says the thermal paste and general appearance looks ok).

Well we are all told the RAM is soldered and unchangeable, but he must surely know this.

Any comments on that?

Next thing, I wondered IF he will change the RAM can he upgrade it to 4g (it's now 2)??

I've found that the group on Mac Rumors.com can usually answer my questions in a matter of minutes. If you are not familiar with that site, check it out.
