BANGKOK, June 2 -- Thailand's Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha in his capacity as director of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) said that national reconciliation is making progress and the formation of a national reform council would be well explained to the general public to prevent disputes.

During a meeting of the council at the Army headquarters today, Gen Prayuth said that afterwards laws would have to be passed to realize reform initiatives but for the time being public relations activities were important.

Gen Prayuth told the meeting that the situation is improving and he would like to see an end to divisions among the people.

He admitted the national reconciliation process would take time.

The NCPO chief assigned permanent secretaries of ministries to improve the work of government agencies and reaffirmed that the military council would not intervene in the improvement process.

He defined the improvement as development-oriented reform.

Besides, Gen Prayuth said the Ministry of Interior and the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) would set up reconciliation centers in the provinces in two weeks.

The ISOC will meet to outline reconciliation-oriented activities on June 4.

Gen Prayuth also said that national problems had accumulated for nine years but at least he was satisfied that the Thai people were not fighting one another for the time being. (MCOT online news)
