Gambling machines seized

BANGKOK: -- A team of police and troops has confiscated 286 horse-gambling machines after raiding a house in Bang Khen in Bangkok.

Police had received a tip-off that the residence on Ramindra Soi 23 was used as a warehouse for the horse-racing machines.

The seized items included 150 circuit and mainboards.

Pol General Aek Angsananon, a deputy National Police chief, told a press conference yesterday that two brothers, Mitr and Pralom Saothon, who were at the house when it was searched on Saturday, told police that they had nothing to do with the machines.

Later, Surachart Kongjai, 40, met with police to explain that he had rented his property in April to Nakhon Pana-ampon, 35.

In the lease, Nakhon allegedly claimed that he was going to use the place to store and repair electric machines. Aek said the house was believed to be a hub for distributing the illegal betting machines to nearby provinces including Nakhon Pathom, Chon Buri, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Nonthaburi.

Well, if they don't use it for horses I got a good idea to put it to use.

Firstly get rid of that pesky grass.

Secondly lay some black top.

Thirdly.....lets go racing!

Its NOT an exclusive private club. People from all walks of life can come here and place bets.

If its anything like the Chiang Mai track, its often a race to see who can come last! Never seen such blatant pulling of horses.

The law in Thailand relates to the concept of public gambling the Government and Police and law makers recognise that they cannot control private gambling so the law is relaxed - a bit like smoking marijuana in Europe - its ilegal but there are public places where people do it.

Can you prove that instead of making throw away comments and accusations AGAIN!! Maybe names proof of gambling might be better than making random accusationms against Thailands business community. Did they murder 28 peaceful protestors as well?? By the way - I CAN provide evidence for that!!

Horse racing is held on Sundays, alternately at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (pictured) and the Turf Club in Nang Lerng.

The general public is admitted to the public stands on race-days only, but not into the main Club premises.

Legal gambling on the Tote system is allowed, however there are also a lot of illegal bookies who will take more adventurous stakes.

Could you give examples of public places where gambling is allowed? I've never heard of any (except the racing) - you can be arrested for playing Dominoes on the beach.

It's not exclusive. But the clubhouse section is exclusive or pay a lot of entry fee, just like any track.

At least at RBSC the Clubhouse and main premises are only open to Members and their guests - there is no option to pay an "entry fee".

and Saturdays in Chiangmai

The same...maybe a little more subtle......the good jockeys can lose by a short head!

Headlines should read, "Police forced to seize their own gambling machines". Everyone knows the police are installing running these stupid machines all over Bkk. Look at the back of Nana Plaza bottom floor and the nasty little alley between soi 7 & 5 etc. etc..

Thanks for the info on the races, is there a site in English with info ? Sounds like it could be a fun day out ?

I see many law abiding Thais very nervous when someone has a pack of cads in their possession with them.

But betting's naughty isn't it?

Operation Gutter Sweep has got to be bending a few noses out of shape. Noses both in and out of some type of uniform.

First time I played a game of cricket at the RBSC I sat at a table near a chappy who was in the middle of an incredible winning streak. After every race, his assistant would return with bricks of money and load them into waiting bags. How intuitive he must have been to know that he would need so many bags to carry his money away??

Amazing, didn't know that horses were into gambling, difficult with those big hooves i would think!

Victimless crimes, the same old BS. Gambling and gamblers will always gamble, legal or not, same with drugs. Better to legalize it, lay down the basic control laws and of course licenses, the taxes to be collected etc. It will bring the tourists back to Thailand big time.

Same with drugs, the more the law tries to stamp it out the bigger the fire gets, LEGALIZE DRUGS!

Old mate of mine came over from the Victoria Racing club (VRC) to help stamp out corruption in the eighty's , met the King and made Thailand home , nothing has changed much , Thailand is still the hub of corruption.

Good time to legalize, modernize and tax businesses that exist but are considered illegal(except murder for hire) such as gambling. Borrow Thaksin's idea of having gambling in specific areas(his was Koh Chang).

Immediately after the last race - every race-day - you will see half a dozen well dressed men accompanied by a few "assistants" with - suspicious bulges in their waistbands - carrying heavy bags to the Car Park.

Make friends with a Member of the Racing Committee if you want to be lucky with your bets!

It's been a while but I doubt it has changed much and an afternoon at the Royal Bangkok racing is a fun afternoon.

Minimal entry price if I remember, you can get very close to the horses paddock and it is pretty much a picnic and cheap beers atmosphere between races.

Minimum bet is fairly low and as others mention it's Tote, which as I understand it means you always get starting price which creates an interesting side effect.

Race starts are held beyond "the off" time sometimes for 10 or 15 minutes and the odds swing massively at this point, but once the race is off it's just like anywhere else with an enthusiastic crowd.

I suspect those who like to study form and take their gambling seriously will be disappointed, but for those who fancy a bit of fun and don't mind losing a few baht on the nags it's a good afternoon out.

Personally I've lost more money at the only other "legal" gambling place I know of Thailand, the Thai boxing but then again that's just part of the camaraderie of getting involved in the local atmosphere.

In answer to Kurnell at post #29

This is just a cut and paste from something I read so please don't attack me.

As we said before, gambling is illegal in Thailand, but the horse races operate above board because they're owned and run by the military. People On 'the Internet' claim the races are all fixed, which is not difficult to believe, and that the best way to get tips is to ply highers-ups with whiskey until they're drunk enough to just straight up tell you who's going to win.

Must have been a hell of a big house!! thumbsup.gif

What the hell is a horse gambling machine?

They are a game like the old pinball machines that were prior to online games. You put a coin in and for fun pick a horse if the horse wins you win a free game and it goes on.
