My girlfriend received a schengenvisa valid for 1 year with multiple entries. Max. duration of stay 90 days.
This visa has been used one time in April for our holiday of 11 days.

We'd like to visit Belgium and Spain in the beginning of August, does she need to provide the embassy any additional paperwork before visiting Europe again or is she really allowed to move in and out as many times as she wants within a year?

If it is a multiple entry as long as you are within the 1 year limit - no problem and no extra paperwork.

Incidentally, through which country are you entering the Schengen area?

I think the total number of days that she can stay in one year is 90 days. It is not 90 days on each visit. I stand to be corrected on that, but I think that is the case. If so, she can only, as you say, enter as many times as she likes within the year as long as the total does not exceed the 90 days.

I'm pretty sure it's 90 days in a 180 day period Tony, I thought it was changed late last year.

I don't know if that's a rolling 180 days, though I would have thought so.

A Schengen visa allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen Area for a maximum stay of up to 90 days in any 180 days period. If you wish to stay longer than 90 days you will need a national long stay visa or a residence permit.

It's indeed 90 days of visit within a rollnig 180 days period. Before it was calculated differently (not rolling) but the Schengen rules have Always been " you can stay 90 days within a 180 day period" rule, both for foreigners requiring a visa aswell as any non-EU foreigners that do not need a visa.

With a multiple entry visa you can come and go to any Schengen country as often as you like, aslong as you do no exceed 90 days within the 180 day period within the Schengen area. Though one must ofcourse still meet the requirement such as proof of funds (self supporting, sponsor), having a place to stay, Insurance etc. So it's best that the Schengen visa holder carries a copy of all evidence that is required (bassically a copy of everything you submitted with the orginal visa application), so that at the external Schengen areea border the border guards can verify that the traveller meets all criteria.
