2,500 cars wheel-clamped in one day on Tuesday



Metropolitan police have set a record of wheel-clamping more than 2,500 cars for illegal parking in a single day on Tuesday.

BANGKOK: -- Pol Gen Wuth Liptapallop, an advisor of the National Police Office, led a team of senior metropolitan police officers to inspect police performance in dealing with illegal parking on Phra Arthit, Lan Luang, Petchaburi, Rajdamri and Silom roads.

He said that he was satisfied with the police record in wheel-clamping more than 2,500 cars today compared to just 30-50 cars on average day.

The wheel clamping and towing away illegally-parked cars are parts of the campaign to clear Bangkok streets of illegally-parked cars to open up more road spaces for traffic flow. Blocking the footpaths by shopowners is also being dealt with.

He claimed that parked cars have not been seen in many city roads since the launch of the campaign which, he said, will be launched across the country especially in tourist destinations.

This would be a good start for pedestrian traffic. Clear all the overflow from shops and restaurants, then move all the poles and trees from the middle of the sidewalks. Removing all the threaded rods, wires and other remnants of past industrial use and filling the holes would make it possible for motorcycles to go faster on the sidewalks where people are trying to pass.

Yes one can't help but think that this is just an extra revenue exercise but if it clears some of the streets in the bigger cities, it's all good. The report states though that this will be nationwide, are the BIB really going to clamp the 'rot idan' out in the countryside? That I've got to see.

If the BIB make tea money from clamping tires so be it.

They had plenty stored is the govt warehouses, where they keep things they really don't want to use or have a hard time selling like rice, wheel-clamps, toilet paper, etc.

Why should it not be a revenue exercise too? Just check London stats for the money made by local councils like Camden! Only question is who keeps the dosh?

Clamp biz is booming. Police needs to make up for the loss of bribes somehow now the soldiers are in charge of all the rest.

Hardly police work, I would think wheel clamping would be the responsibility of the city such as it is in most countries, police are usually only used for more important work than this, having said that this "clamp down" is warranted and good on the powers that be that have ordered it...

That's not the point. Sure there's a cost, somebody has to be paid to do it but if people did not do it then there is a huge benefit but no revenue. So what's your point. Stopping these idiots that block the traffic lane for whatever reason is a must. Also stopping shops blocking the sidewalk is a must, they don't rent that space and I for one don't like walking out onto the road to get around them.
