BANGKOK, June 11 - A preliminary inspection of the air quality around one of the factories in the IRPC Group in Thailand's Rayong province has found no air pollution despite an explosion in the factory yesterday.

Natural Resources and Environment Ministry Pollution Control Department director general Wichien Jungrungruang said the inspection earlier today confirmed that the blast was caused by a leak in the hydro gas tube, which prompted the blaze.

He said the department has inspected various groups of air pollutants, especially volatile organic compounds, including, benzene, styrene, and sulfur dioxide, which could be produced by the factory fire and in nearby communities.

The inspections showed none of the substances were at higher than standard level, though a team of officials from the Rayong Office of Natural Resources and Environment will be sent in to thoroughly examine the pollution level again.

An explosion rocked the petrochemical plant yesterday, sending plumes of smoke up high in the air and alarming local residents to be concerned by the level of pollution in the area. (MCOT online news)

There is a difference between no air pollution and not higher than standard level.

What is the standard level? Does the Thai standard level fall in line with Western Industrialized Nations?

They said there was no air pollution before the blast.... so it's back to the normal highly polluted Rayong atmosphere.

The main complaint from Rayong residents is about the air pollution.w00t.gif

However the Durian from Rayong is good. clap2.gif

as an aside we were sitting about 6kms south of it having a beer on the beach when it happened, no noise of an explosion and there wasn't so much smoke so we didin't know anything major had happened till we saw it on the news.

IRPC Groupe has found no air pollution, as shown in the picture above.

Looking at the black smoke in the sky does not promote Thai happiness...look how much blue is still left instead !!!! (From new guidlines for health and saftey department)

I was today at Mae Ram Phueng Beach not far from Ban Phe - Rayong. There was oil spill at the beach. First it was not to see but then my feet went black. Some people say it´s related to the IRPC accident. There was something on TV too, they said it´s not advised to swim at the beach for one week.

And I bet the 'safety experts' had a really good hard sniff through their masks, to ascertain the area is 'clear', yeah? wai.gif

Open your car window and take a whiff. That's standard.
